This is a small fanciful model of the full sized Golem that was legendarily built in a Synagogue (that is now Freedman’s studio) in 1940 to protect the congregants from their neighbors. It is from the "Golem of Ridgewood" show Freedman did at Valentine Gallery in Ridgewood, Queens earlier this year.

It is from the Golem of Ridgewood show Freedman did at Valentine Gallery in Ridgewood, Queens earlier this year.

Artist Biography: Matt Freedman received his BA from Harvard and his MA and MFA from the University of Iowa and is currently teaching at The University of Pennsylvania Graduate Fine Art program. His recent solo shows include The Golem of Ridgewood at Valentine Gallery, Clumpism at LIU Humanities Gallery, Twin Twin 3 at Pierogi Gallery, Twin Twin 4 at Big&Small/Casual Gallery, Twin Twin 5 at Brooklyn Waterfront Arts Fest, and More Than Super at Gogue Space. He has performed with Tim Spelios at the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Fireproof, VertexList Gallery, The Boiler, The Airplane, Big&Small/Casual Gallery, with Jeanne Golan at The Stone, Nassau College, and with Emily Manzo for a European tour. This past September Freedman and his collaborator Jude Tallichet installed and enacted Le Grand Slam Guignol, as part of Flux Factory’s Public Trust exhibition.
