This photograph shows Andton, the grandfather of the artist, writing a letter to his wife during the second World War, just a year before he was severely wounded while serving for the Wehrmacht in occupied France. This work was part of Schönberger’s solo exhibition at Cuchifritos Gallery during summer 2012, for which she created an allegory of the complexity of the consequences of war, the traumas of a whole nation, and the impact on subsequent generations. In the end, her highly personal viewpoint transforms the discourse into something undoubtedly universal.

Artist Biography:Sonya Schönberger, born in Germany, studied social anthropology in Berlin and Zurich, video art at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and experimental media design at the University of Arts in Berlin, where she finished her studies as a fellow of Prof. Thomas Arslan. In her recent work she meets eyewitnesses from the time of World War II and leads personal interviews with them, to explore the cultural memory of German society. She follows the witness and keeper of memories into everyday life of the Third Reich, to the battlefields, in prison camps, their escapes, into devastated cities, into a life after. Her work was shown internationally in Iran, Denmark, Georgia, Canada as well as recently in Cuchifritos in the Lower East Side. Sonya Schönberger received a grant for her six-month residency at Flux Factory in 2012 through Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral (Germany), in cooperation with Residency Unlimited.
