”I like the fragments of old master paintings at the Met. They stand on their own as paintings, but you know that they where reduced from a larger painting. This gives them the most interesting compositions. For this drawing, I cut down a larger drawing. I wasn’t happy with the figure on the left and I think the piece benefited from my removal of him; thus it is a fragment.”
