recording of live performance played in John Parker’s music chair through the show
Sonic Landfill 2002
Sonic Landfill was performed during Steve Bradley's artist residency, the rivercommission, at Hull Time Based Arts, http://timebase.org, Hull, England. Bradley invited several artists from the Hull community to participate in his installation/performance; they joined him to pick up debris and other discarded objects found in dumpsters, the streets, the local landfill, and tip [Recycle Center] that might have the potential to become a sound instrument.

They met several times to discuss a structure for a live performance at the Live Arts Space in the Ferens Museum in Hull.
The performance began with one artist manipulating rubbish to release its sound, then moved sequentially to each artist for a solo opportunity. The cycle began again with the initiating solo artist, except this time all the other artists created a subtle texture of sound just underneath each repeated solo performance. When the last artist finished, electroacoustics and sampling were introduced, building up to a massive "dumping-rubbish-into-a-landfill sound" as all the materials/instruments were "played" simultaneously.

Participating artists included Gisele Bone, Kate Donovan, Rob Gawthrop, Chris Gladwin, John Hirst, Espen Jensen, Bob Levene, Emily Wilczek, and Steve Bradley, project composer.
