Guidelines

For the past decade, Flux Factory has offered an informal, artist-run, and collective residency program comprised of a changing community of creative collaborators. Until now, this program has operated organically and been self-organized. We are opening a new home this July and are setting in motion an expanded, professionalized, artist-run residency program.

Our open call is currently closed and will be re-instated at some point in the spring of 2010.

GUIDELINES:

New Building
Our new building offers accommodations for artists and are fully artist-run. We offer not only a welcoming community of artists with which to exchange ideas and learn, but also accommodations, work facilities, and direct exhibition opportunities.

Duration
Currently ranges from 1 to 6 months depending on availability.

Programming
As Fluxers, artists will be able to get involved in all of Flux Factory’s programming, including the Flux Factory exhibitions and public programs. In our new location we also have a project space gallery devoted to solo and group exhibitions by resident artists.

Facilities
Flux Factory residents are free to use all facilities and resources, as well as access to other city programs such as Materials for the Arts (two blocks away!). In house facilities will include a woodshop, tools, silk-screening facilities, and office/presentation space.

Fluxhood
Flux Factory is a communally run center. All residents take part in the creation and maintenance of the Flux facilities and programming. That means doing weekly chores, putting in volunteer hours to home improvements, and attending weekly Monday night meetings. Our premises are new and we are renovating them with a large group of volunteers. Together, we’ll be arranging life at the new Flux building, so expect a changing environment, lots of learning together through experience, and many opportunities to leave your mark!

Criteria
The Flux Factory residency is tailored to American and international artists of all mediums and practices. We also welcome cultural producers of all stripes, social activists, academics, and anyone who’s creative, adventurous, and willing to come to New York City to create new bodies of work that are informed by their experience here.

Selection
Residents are selected by a jury comprised of our Advisory Committee, a group of specially invited artists, curators, intellectuals, and administrators who serve in an advisory capacity.

Cost
There is currently no individual financial support for a studio.  We are in the process of developing partnerships with other arts institutions both locally and internationaly, towards supporting residencies at Flux Factory.
