SUMMARY:Double Foreign New Zealand Chinese Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Weekends 12-5 pm \n\n\n\nOctober 22-23 \n\n\n\nOctober 29-30 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn installation by Li-Ming Hu \n\n\n\nPart of the Mama’s Augmented Reality exhibition series\, where artists are asked to create/interpret their mother’s kitchens as they exist in memory with whatever materials they have at their disposal. Curated by Eleni Zaharopolous. \n\n\n\nLi-Ming Hu hails from Aotearoa New Zealand\, where her parents landed in the 70s\, from Singapore and Taiwan\, where their parents in turn\, had fled to from China due to war and other awfulness. Her parents prioritized cultural assimilation\, so she was not taught any of the Chinese languages\, or introduced to many elements of the cultures they were brought up in. This approach extended less to food\, so the kitchen was a place to be (kind-of) Chinese\, to make dishes whose names she could not pronounce\, with ingredients out of packages she could not read\, while also learning to bake out of the Edmonds Cookery Book. \n\n\n\nRSVPs on Facebook on this event
