DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nJoin us September 18–20\, 2026 for Source Material\, a group BioArt exhibition at Flux IV\, & a weekend\, research\, panel discussions\, and workshops. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nFriday\, September 18 \n\n\n\n• Opening Reception | 5–10 PM \n\n\n\nJoin us for the opening reception of Source Material\, featuring a group exhibition of BioArt works exploring the intersections of art\, biology\, materials\, and living systems. \n\n\n\nFood and drinks available \n\n\n\nSaturday\, September 19 \n\n\n\n• Open Gallery Time | 12- 4PM \n\n\n\nVisit Source Materials throughout the day with a gallery ticket. \n\n\n\nSunday\, September 20 \n\n\n\n• Art & Research: Presentations & Panel | 10 AM–1PM \n\n\n\nPresentations followed by a panel discussion bringing together researchers and artists to explore the intersection of Biomaterials and Art. \n\n\n\n• Workshop | 2:30 PM–5 PM \n\n\n\nWe’ll close out the weekend with a community workshop where we’ll come together to create a collective bioplastic piece. \n\n\n\n• Open Gallery | 1–5 PM \n\n\n\n_________________________________________________________________________________ \n\n\n\nSource Material traces matter back to its origin. The works begin as something ordinary: a shell\, a spill\, a scrap\, a smear of soil\, a living culture. \n\n\n\nBiomaterial researchers are constantly sourcing materials\, whether foraging\, nurturing\, or extracting. The act of sourcing becomes the act of making. \n\n\n\nEach artist’s inquiry draws on cultural lineage\, personal experience\, and individual relationships. The works search beyond questions of usability and production; they tell stories. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition captures the moment an artist encounters a material and becomes inexplicably infatuated. It glimpses under the veil of biology into a complex network of living cultures\, waste streams\, memory\, and tools that alter perception. \n\n\n\nSource Materials exhibits 14 artists\, presenting biomaterial sculptures\, woven pieces\, household objects\, film\, and transformed waste. We explore\, create\, and innovate at the intersection between materials\, biology\, and design. \n\n\n\nThe Genspace Biomaterials Studio BioArtist Incubator supports artists who believe the materials we live with are worth reimagining. Each year\, select Studio members and invited guests engage in extended lab access and mentorship to deepen their research into biological and regenerative materials. The Incubator culminates in an annual exhibition during NYC Climate Week\, where artists share their work and invite broader conversations. \n\n\n\nAbout Genspace: \n\n\n\nGenspace is the world’s first community biology lab — a place where people of all backgrounds and identities can learn\, create\, and grow with the life sciences. \n\n\n\nSince 2009\, we have served the greater New York area by providing hands-on STEAM education programs for youth and adults\, cultural and outreach events for the public\, and a membership program to support New York’s community of creatives\, researchers\, and entrepreneurs. Our programs demystify scientific processes\, provide a platform for innovation\, and cultivate the next generation of life sciences leaders in emerging global technologies\, such as biotechnology\, neuroscience\, epidemiology\, genomics\, and many more. \n\n\n\n—————————————————————————————– \n\n\n\nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
