DESCRIPTION:Fluctuations is an evening of video art featuring works by current Fluxers-in-Residence at the ARoS atelier. Fluctuations\, beyond the Flux pun embedded in the title\, is themed on change and collaboration\, while taking cues from the Situationist International: How do Fluxers together interact with the city\, collaborate within this environment\, or disrupt the day-to-day? The screening will also include collective works from Flux Factory’s previous times in Aarhus\, notably Jaime Iglehart’s Public Broad Fluxing\, from the “Infamous Outpost of the Semi-Legitimate Nation of Flux” exhibition at Spanien 19C in 2012. \nThe event is curated by Georgia Muenster. Georgia is a New York-born and London-based independent contemporary art curator with a focus on urbanism\, video\, and collectivity\, and she has been a member of Flux Factory since 2008. Kalon Hayward will help the class express themselves using West African inspired movement and music. we will unlock creativity in our bodies by exploring west African and Congolese dance techniques. DESCRIPTION:Slowly unfurling clouds of tones\, swirling drones\, and other lovely sounds conjured up right before your eyes – a live set of music you could lie on the floor for by notable US ambient musician Ben Seretan. \nBen Seretan is a musician and writer from Troy\, New York who is working hard. In 2018\, he released a 24 hour long album of guitar clouds called My Life’s Work. In 2020 came Youth Pastoral\, a lightly dance music influenced collection of cathartic full band jammers about breaking up with God (named one of the best albums of the year by Pitchfork). This year  – emerging from the Internet as if a 17-year burrow in the woods – Seretan whipped up Cicada Waves\, a set of piano recordings from the riotous and cacophonous woods of north Georgia where\, more often than not\, the piano isn’t played. Inspired by Agnes Varda’s “Cleo from 5 to 7\,” the short film follows Jevi\, a New York based Filipino painter\, as he makes his way from his small studio in New York to the museum where he works 5 days a week as a security guard during the COVID-19 pandemic. A preview screening of an unfinished version of the film will premiere in the auditorium at ARoS Museum\, on September 15 ahead of its New York premiere in October and will be followed by a Q&A with online attendance by Jevijoe Vitug. \nCarlos David TC is a video artist and experimental filmmaker based in NYC. Born in Venezuela and raised in Miami\, his work explores identity in the digital space\, coming of age in the era of reality tv\, and mobile content creation as a means of communication. His practice uses documentation to produce self-portraits that are then presented via moving image\, screenshots\, films\, memes\, music videos\, performance and site specific installations. \nThis event is made possible (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. SUMMARY:Screening: "The Wake" and "Nova: A New Spelling of My Name" with Jemila MacEwan and Nova Scott-James
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the ARoS Public theater for a screening of two new films by Flux Artists-in-Residence. \nThe Wake \nIn this program MacEwan will walk audiences through strategies for responding to ecological grief and overwhelm. We will be guided through an empathetic eco-morphic approach to making sense of humanity’s role and responsibilities within the larger network of indwellers with whom we share this planet. The program will begin with a screening of MacEwan’s film ‘The Wake’. \n‘The Wake’ (2019) is a performance-art film about environmental grief. In the film\, Europe’s largest glacier Vatnajökull is melting and its wisdom teeth have become unrooted. The protagonist attempts to restore the teeth but eventually succumbs to the irreparability of the situation. After all hope is lost\, one of the teeth speaks to the protagonist\, in Icelandic (voiced by an eight-year-old girl) and offers counsel. The wisdom tooth’s sense of time and memory seem confused\, but their capacity for compassion is boundless. \nThe film screening will be followed by a creative writing workshop. In this workshop MacEwan invites participants to imagine what a personal treaty with the planet might look like. Treaties are written as law binding agreements between two parties or more for the purpose of sharing resources\, mutual recognition\, and peaceful co-existence. Many of the treaties that exist around the world today that involve colonial entities are routinely breached for corporate and political interest\, and the individuals for whom these treaties represent have little power to protest these violations. \nIn this workshop MacEwan will work with participants to imagine what a personal treaty with the land on which they reside and with our planet might look like. A personal treaty returns agency back to the individual to form their own guidelines for acting in mutual interest with the more-than-human world and honor their own agreements. \nJemila MacEwan is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in New York. MacEwan is known for their intimately interwoven earthworks\, sculptures\, films and performances that build a contemporary mythology of meteorites\, volcanoes\, prehistoric super-fungi and melting glaciers. These stories engage with the emotional complexity of humanity’s destructive impact\, to the planet and to itself\, as a way to understand what it means to be human within the Holocene Extinction. \nNova: A New Spelling of My Name \nAfter “The Wake” we will screen the new short film “Nova: A New Spelling of My Name” to be followed by an in-person Q&A with the director and star of the film Nova Scott-James. A young artist\, born Nicole but renamed Nova\, sets out on a healing journey on an indigenous Taino sanctuary in upstate New York. SUMMARY:A Train to Utopia with Tzu-Huan Lin
DESCRIPTION:In this ARoS special edition of A Train To Utopia\, participants will be required to play roles and games that generate vocabulary that becomes a guide instruction for individuals to navigate in the ARoS Museum. \nTzu-Huan Lin’s (b. Taipei\, 1986) work centers around personal experience as an immigrant\, adapting to connect different subjects or stories to address the phenomena. He received an MFA in Digital Arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Lin’s work has been included in international group exhibitions such as ”The 15th Digital Art Festival Taipei (2020)” “The 6th International Video Art Exhibition (2018)”\, “ADAF 14th Athens Digital Arts Festival (2018)” and solo exhibitions at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts (2020) and Taipei Fine Art Museum (2017).

DESCRIPTION:We invite you to blur the lines between the micro and macro cosmos. Let’s be giants among germs and at the same time germs among giants. \nBodies break down and decay\, providing support for other bodies. In this workshop\, we want to continue the process of body breaking and making using our natural tools of the imagination to do the same to our own creations. \nLet yourself pass from one being to another. Let the imagination feed on dead plants\, animal and human remains as it deconstructs intricate life forms into their simplest components. \nTime table: 25th of September 2021\n13.00. We meet at The Botanical Garden (Main entrance: Møllevejen 10A\, 8000 Aarhus).\n13.30. Discovery walk: Gathering of materials.\n14.30. We walk to ARoS Museum.\n15.00 – 17.00. The making of The Museum of Natural Non-History.\n*The workshop is open to all age groups\, but children and teens under 15 years old should be accompanied by an adult. \nWorkshop Leaders:\nÞórir and Brák from KAKTUS\nBrák Jónsdóttir (b. 1996) is a visual artist and Þórir Hermann (b. 1994) is a composer\, gardener and a multimedia artist. Their collaborative works mainly take the form of video works\, books\, sculptures and performances\, but recently their subjects have revolved around humanity’s relationship with nature. Brák and Þórir explore life forms and organisms. Their approach is often oriented towards the blushing tension between pain and pleasure\, natural and man-made materials. “We strive to look for a way to be at one with the world and sometimes find it in the gap between the imaginary and the real\, by intertwining the portals of reality and fantasy.” In their most recent work they have addressed the power of vulnerability while recognizing and embracing the interdependence and connection humans have with the earth. SUMMARY:Short Films Screening by Patrick Topitschnig
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the ARoS Museum Theater for a screening of selected short films by Patrick Topitschnig. \nA kind of black humor pervades Patrick Topitschnig’s videos. Like in the horror-movie genre he works with audiovisual situations which affect the bodies of the spectators provoking an uncertainty\, sometimes a slight restlessness. \nPrecisely composed images expose their own constructedness and testify to the artist’s interest in cinematic duration. Occasionally\, this duration becomes a metaphor for the literal “lifetime” of pro-tagonists\, objects\, and buildings. All aspects of cinematic sound – a composed score\, music\, spoken language – are used to reflect the connections between image and narration creating a very specific atmosphere\, whereas the “real“ backstory of a work is often revealed much later\, be it the history of an abandoned salt mine in Romania or a portrait of a high-tech funeral home in Australia.

It’s a celebration of freedom and liberation. The choreographies recall the condition of slavery and the sound of chains around the ankles but at the same time it parodies the (often drunk) masters and denounces the oppression they practice. The rhythms and colorful costumes express joy and enthusiasm\, leading in the end to the ideal break of physical and/or psychological change.
