Our last event this season on Flux Island\, we’ll be closing out our fourth year celebrating our beloved resident community. Explore the work of 9 artists\, our season-end exhibition and Island Luminaria Two. \n\n\n\nPERFORMANCES \n\n\n\n1-3 PM: Lera Lerner invites you to a participatory performance with the Non-Clairvoyant Tarot Deck3 PM: Daria Orlova and will owen will be performing a sound composition with a collaboratively created sculpture. The sculpture itself is meant to perform on its own and collaborate with Daria and will. \n\n\n\nPARTICIPATING ARTISTS \n\n\n\nItala Aguilera is a visual artist born and raised in Mexico City\, based in New York City where she works as a teacher at the Textile Arts Center and as a costume designer. Through her artistic practice she imagines an alternative reality in which the objects that surround us aren’t made for profit\, but instead are compelling and reveal the complexity of human emotions. \n\n\n\nYasmeen Abdallah is an interdisciplinary artist\, working across intersections of sculpture\, textiles\, painting\, and social engagement. Drawing from the personal and the political through elements of memory\, empowerment\, trauma\, resilience\, and persistence\, her work takes shape in various capacities from minimal gestures to maximal installations. This work is inspired by contemporary culture\, history\, space\, place and personhood. She is interested in the stories told\, and secrets kept by imprints and objects that speak to our contemporary culture. \n\n\n\n502 Bad Gateway is the artist duo of Alexander Baumann and Robert Ruth\, whose collaborative artistic disciplines include motion capture performance\, oil painting\, 3D game development\, sculpture\, vintage tech restoration\, building audio synthesizers\, animation\, and filmmaking. Their practice focuses on integrating their artistic methods with deprecated technologies from many different eras\, drawing on the history of usage to underline the intent of the work. With a foot in the world of experimental film and live performance\, and the other in fine art and installation\, 502 Bad Gateway desires to break the traditionally static\, immutable nature of gallery work\, by incorporating the real-time responsiveness of interactive live performance. \n\n\n\nZack Handler is a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist interested in representing worlds that feel at once utopic and neptunian. In creating spaces that reflect boundless fantasy and somber interiority\, Zack is possessed by the idea that emphasizing imaginal spaces can reawaken narratives for alternative futures.  \n\n\n\nLera Lerner (b. 1988\, Leningrad) is an artist\, curator\, and mediator based in Paris. Through participatory projects\, she investigates the paradoxical nature of expectations\, the energy of side effects\, the ethics of lying\, suppressed desires\, distracting maneuvers\, and the possibilities of interspecific and cross-disciplinary communication. \n\n\n\nJodie Lyn-Kee-Chow is a Jamaican-American interdisciplinary artist living and working in NYC.  Her work often explores site-specificity through performance and installation art while investigating colonial histories pertaining to her Afro-Caribbean\, Asian\, and European heritage. Lyn-Kee-Chow’s work has been shown internationally. \n\n\n\nAmelia Marzec is an American artist engaging with communications infrastructure to inform a speculative future. Their current project\, Itinerant Signal Institute\, examines the effect of local emissions on global climate change\, and an ethnography to denote the changing of seasons. \n\n\n\nSally Beauti TwinWhy is the sky blue water wet? These are things that Sally Beauti Twin\, the world’s most vacuous artist\, hasn’t considered yet…but plans to do so soon. Artists make the dreams that make the future. In the future Sally wants  some dreams. Like bubbles\, her art levitates viewers to empyrean realms. Like other trans artists she paints with a love of nature and tonalist fantasy.  \n\n\n\nDaria Orlova is an trancedisciplinary artist from Murmansk. At the beginning of her artistic activity\, Daria built total utopian installations\, placing her works and the viewer there as direct participants in the interaction process (“Cafe of Dancing Lights”\, Winzavod\, Moscow; “Shimmering Letters. Agency of Memory”\, Future3\, Kiel). Now her practice pays more attention to situativeness\, invisible choreography and mistakes. Total installations have become routes. The artist tries to fix the movement of thoughts\, bodies and their agents by drawing with her eyes closed\, moving away from an open dialogue with the artistic process\, turning off one of the senses. Errors that neither a person nor a technique can exclude from their work are guides and assistants in recognizing images. Daria is also engaged in sound\, listening\, research of acoustic environments\, for communication with non-human agents. Archives field recordings and collages them\, turning them into a special kind of sound documentation. Composes sound plays and operas\, plays noise and drone on modular synthesizers. \n\n\n\nWILL OWEN\, originally from western North Carolina\, US\, is an artist\, composer\, and curator currently based in Philadelphia\, PA. Will graduated in 2022 with a Master of Fine Arts from UPenn and received the Sprintz Prize and Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship award. Will is currently a Master’s level Thesis Advisor at NYU’s Integrated Design and Media program. Will’s work is about urgent state changes: physical\, emotional\, political\, and environmental. Often working with historical and site specificity\, Will works with many mediums to convey conceptual ideas\, but returns most often to three: Sound\, Sculpture\, and Food.

While I am using technology to quickly ‘read the stars’ from a hand-held device\, the exchange requires an element of sharing\, storytelling\, vulnerability and empathy which challenges the absence of human feeling promoted by artificial intelligence and Big Tech. \n\n\n\n/// \n\n\n\nThe HTMLgardeness — Sowing HTML but Harvesting AI | Ursula Endlicher2024\, WebAR\, gif animation; acorn coffee\, dried pears and cherriesThe HTMLgardeness – Sowing HTML but Harvesting AI is a series of AR-Walks and experiences triggered by scanning the bark of trees\, a natural QR-code. A critical yet playful series\, it features the HTMLgardeness\, a character played by the artist\, reflecting on climate and systems\, code and fragility\, while offering AI-generated harvest. \n\n\n\nIn these walks guests are invited to venture out into different neighborhoods to discover\, with smart phone and the artist’s WebAR “bARk” in hand\, the HTMLgardeness’ trees and portals to reveal her tree-inspired AR dances\, while sampling tree-specific drinks and snacks offered along the way. \n\n\n\nFor Spiritual Machines the HTMLgardeness’ surroundings will be extended to the Colonels Row neighborhood on Governors Island where she’ll inhabit five trees! \n\n\n\nThe augmented trees continue to be active and can be visited also after the event using the artist’s WebAR “bARk” at: https://html.bark.garden. \n\n\n\n/// \n\n\n\nPowered by the Glitch | Adelle Lin Yingxi2024\, screen\, computer\, webcam\, custom 3D models\, AR softwarePowered by the Glitch explores the intersection of art\, technology\, and social activism through feminist cyborg theory and an interactive augmented reality (AR) installation. Audiences engage with their inner glitch\, becoming feminist cyborgs through AR\, challenging norms\, and embracing identity fluidity. \n\n\n\nThe project interrogates how virtual personas influence real-life identities\, proposing a synthesized identity merging both realms. Embracing the glitch as resistance and transformation\, it disrupts binary logic\, celebrating hybridity and the in-between\, aiming to dismantle societal expectations of women’s perfection and constant performance for the world’s gaze. \n\n\n\nRooted in Legacy Russell’s concept of the glitch as “a form of refusal\, a strategy of non-performance\,” the project interrogates the possibilities within conformist systems. Participants will explore new forms of identity that emerge from the disruptions and imperfections inherent in both technology and nature. DESCRIPTION:Location: 404A Colonels Row\, Governors Island NYC \n\n\n\nImage: Itala Aguilera.\n\n\n\nA very (literally!) laid back sunbathing event about elder-visibility and allyship. \n\n\n\nBring your grandparents\, parents or yourself; a blanket; some sunscreen; and water\, and come celebrate the anniversary of the 1992 court ruling that allows chests and breasts equal access to the light of day in the state of New York\, while also celebrating bodies of all ages\, shapes\, sizes and genders. This is a preview event for The Golden Colonel\, a speculative retirement home for artists on Governors Island that will open on July 13\, 2024. The Golden Colonel will still be under construction\, so not yet open to the public\, but July 7 is an official holiday for the organization\, celebrated annually with elder- (and ally-) optionally topless sunbathing. DESCRIPTION:Even though dirt is where our food comes from\, is where our bodies get buried when we die\, and is literally everywhere we go\, it is not represented yet in the emoji universe. Somehow we have emojis for unicorns\, pufferfish\, poodles and Santa Claus\, but not dirt! Dirty Time is planning to try to correct this oversight and will be submitting a proposal for a dirt emoji to the Unicode foundation in 2024.  \n\n\n\nDirty Signs is an exhibition of international artist responses to the idea of emojifying dirt\, featuring works by B a r b a r a Schneider\, Daniel S. DeLuca\, Ed Woodham\, Gustavo Gómez-Mejía\, IPRAMENE\, Lee Tusman\, Liz Nofziger\, M Greenwald\, Maia Liebeskind\, Noelle Salaun\, Renée Crowley\, Sarah Dahlinger and Vidya Giri in 2D\, 3D and 4D formats. Dirty Time will also be collecting visitor suggestions for a potential dirt emoji through a “think tank” installation within the exhibition\, and several participatory activities on September 30. \n\n\n\nDirty Signs runs from September 23 – October 1 2023\, with a rousing closing event including live performances by Sarah Dahlinger and Ed Woodham on September 30 from 1-5pm. \n\n\n\nDirty Time is Hey There Kapplow and Walker Tufts. We have been investigating the impossibility of cleanliness since 2021 and we’ve dug up a dirty little secret: there’s no clean that’s not dirty. \n\n\n\nDirt feeds you and eats you. Dirt is your companion and your portal to the past and the future. We’re here to help you recognize your glorious\, delicious dirtiness and your connection to all time through dirt.

DESCRIPTION:Join Flux for an artist talk in conjunction with The Epileptic Eye group show.The Epileptic Eye is a groundbreaking exhibition showcasing the work of women artists living with epilepsy from around the world in order to raise awareness and create a dialogue through the empowering platform of the arts. \n\n\n\nShort films that have been selected in festivals around the world\, photography\, installation\, and crochet by artists Sally Cinnamon (Canada)\, Cintamani Calise (UK-USA-Italy)\, Cristina Breazu (France – Romania) and Malo Sutra Fish (France – USA) form this rare exhibition. \n\n\n\nThis show invites the public to enter an immersive\, tactile space opening a discussion regarding our personal and shared experiences of this neurological condition. Our art\, inextricably impacted by our condition\, became our tool to communicate to others about the paradoxes rising from having epilepsy. \n\n\n\nIn this setting\, we open our perspective on life with this common condition\, and the art practices that form in response to it. We bring to light the transcendence that visits and motivates our survival together. The crushing contrast of our experiences with epilepsy – the way it can bring us to the edges of consciousness in a beautiful\, fragile\, frightening way – this is what we display.

DESCRIPTION:Join Flux for the opening of the Artists Formerly Known as Prints exhibition. \n\n\n\nAugust 26-October 1\, 2023Location: Upstairs\, Colonels Row House 404AOpening: Saturday\, August 26 12-6pm \n\n\n\nThe idea for this show began with a group of artists who at some point considered themselves to be printmakers. As their practices have evolved to include conceptually driven multi-faceted projects and access to facilities have come and gone their prints have often taken a back seat\, tacked up in a corner or shoved away in a cardboard box. This exhibition is an opportunity to embrace the playful discoveries inherent in the printmaking process and showcase prints that these artists might not typically prioritize. \n\n\n\nIn printmaking\, when an image is transferred from a matrix to a new surface (often paper) there is a suspenseful\, yet magical moment of transformation and the artist lets go of control of the image giving it fully over to the process. For centuries artists have been producing prints\, often editions of prints\, that run parallel to their primary practices. Perhaps\, this trusting of the process is part of what has drawn them to do so. Printmaking allows for a materially driven thought process which can generate imagery and ideas in a physical and freeing manner. A type of thinking which artists in the flux community apply to all types of making. Artists Formerly Known as Prints celebrates these printmakerly works that often get brushed to the side. \n\n\n\nEvents:2-5pmThis Saturday from 2-5pm\, Jonathan Sims will be at the Flux Island space sharing The Elements\, a newly emerging and constantly evolving form of divination/fortune-telling. DESCRIPTION:Join Flux for an Artist Talk with Amelia Marzec in conjunction with their exhibition\, “All That Is Seen And Unseen.” \n\n\n\nFor additional information: ameliamarzec.com \n\n\n\n“All That Is Seen And Unseen\,” a solo art exhibition by Amelia Marzec at Flux Factory on Governors Island\, opens Saturday August 19\, 2pm-5pm. The exhibition presents a collection of objects on the topic of a “queer technological Eastern European diaspora.” \n\n\n\nThe installation includes: shrines that broadcast coming out stories over Family Radio Service; a typeface inspired by an AI’s opinion of early Slavic writing systems; a sculpture that listens for military aircraft through a radio hidden in a folk art ceiling decoration; and digital photographs that depict the body in ritual garments from Pagan marriage and Catholic priesthood. \n\n\n\nSoftware with imagery based on traditional papercuts\, depicting women’s bodies\, weapons\, and pre-Christian symbols\, will be shown. It will also be projected on church buildings and institutional architecture during the run of the show\, in conjunction with the Island Luminaria exhibition. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, a virtual reality piece will be presented at Harvestworks. It is a walking simulator filled with impotent paper-doll tanks. \n\n\n\nAmelia Marzec is a Brooklyn-based artist engaging with communications infrastructure to inform a speculative future. Her work has been exhibited at SIGGRAPH\, MIT\, ISEA (Canada)\, University of the Arts Helsinki (Finland)\, ONCE Foundation Contemporary Art Biennial (Spain)\, NODE Forum for Digital Arts Biennial (Germany)\, and is part of the Rhizome ArtBase. She was a resident at Eyebeam\, Ox-Bow\, and Harvestworks; a fellow at NYSCA/NYFA\, A.I.R. Gallery\, and Columbia University; a visiting artist at CalArts; and nominated for the World Technology Awards for Art. Through myth making and tool use\, they facilitate small groups in building bridges from land to sea\, imagining sustainable ecologies. \n\n\n\nWith the aim to cultivate space for collective trust and shared dreaming\, Tree+Oyster arrive with non verbal communication and play to shed anthropocentric perspective and facilitate opportunities for emergent ritual. \n\n\n\nTree+Oyster merge archipelagic Indigenous mythologies from the Dominican Republic and the Philippines in order to stoke memory\, resist erasure\, and generate new mythologies. With curiosity to discover cross-cultural parallels in land-water relationship between Indigenous communities and their own personal decolonization research\, T+O engage in immersive research deepening their relationship to land and community. From this foundation\, they facilitate creative gatherings bridging inner and outer ecologies — a practice in tuning our personal\, communal\, and digital relationship to the landscape. \n\n\n\nSite-specific gatherings consist of co-creation exercises and games\, sensorial ceremonies\, body mapping\, collective altar building\, and musical forest jams. Seasonal elements\, i.e. sand\, soil\, and vegetation\, inform the location and structure of interactive installations. These onsite activations create a generative mediated space for communal storytelling. Rooted in the study of Indigenous histories\, local-to-global community\, and ecology\, Tree+Oyster aim to build a cross-cultural campfire generating warmth\, in empathetic pursuit of sustainability.4pm-6pm: “Bring Your Own Brat” Workshop with Sacha Vega“Bring Your Own Brat” stems from the craving to perform a tantrum in the face of conditioned modes of being\, moving\, and seeing. The workshop is facilitated by Sacha Vega and is part of ongoing studio experiments in expressions of personal needs. Through a series of shared movement exercises and writing prompts we will explore the archetype of the brat as a means to probe at moralized choreographies in our lives. Whether your brat emerges through foot stomping\, vocal exclamation\, a written decree\, or total refusal – all are welcome. No previous dance or performance experience necessary.

Why does time go only one way and why is that way towards chaos? \n\n\n\nthe audience will leave the presentation with tangible and concrete tools to pursue their own healing.5pm-6pm: Film Screening and Performances with Feralpy ArtistsLZ GrandersonNova Scott JamesBlack Butoh\, loud visuals of silence by LZ GrandersonBlack Butoh is an experimental\, movement-based short film using the Japanese art form of Butoh to navigate the anxieties of being a Black man in the United States. \n\n\n\nIn an article titled “Raising a Black Boy to Not Be Afraid\,” Nicole Fleetwood navigates an all-too-familiar narrative for parents raising 12-year-old black boys in the US— one filled with\, well\, fear. The one-liner that triple-dog-dared me to make Black Butoh\, read\, “The violence done to Tamir Rice [sic] was not only his death but the silencing of his voice.” Black Butoh asks if the black body can speak for the voices that have been silenced. And like raising a Black boy to not be afraid in the US— it tries it’s damned hardest. \n\n\n\nBlack Butoh\, in many ways\, outlines the mounting tension leading up to recent protest. Like Butoh\, It’s mourning\, it’s triumph\, it’s fear in celebration\, it’s a call to action\, it’s anxiety filled bones\, it’s dynamic\, it’s still\, it’s life before death\, indeed\, it is a peephole into life itself. \n\n\n\nNova: A New Spelling of My Name by Nova Scott-JamesA young artist\, born as Nicole\, but renamed Nova\, sets out on a healing journey on an indigenous sanctuary in upstate New York. Accompanied by the Wild Darlings\, a black + queer\, healing arts collective\, she transmutes the trauma of her past by performing in white-face as the male teacher that sexually abused her as a child. View more event details and RSVP for workshops and performances at Eventbrite. \n\n\n\nWorkshop:2pm-6pm: Group-as-a-whole Workshop with Julia GladstoneGroup-as-a-whole theory posits that when individuals form a group\, the resulting union becomes an entity in its own right with a sum greater than its parts. We will apply both experiential and meta-analysis of our “groupness” together through embodied investigations\, scores\, and LARPing. We will focus on the “here and now“ as a lens through which to uncover underlying themes and dynamics of power\, care\, ambivalence\, desire\, etc. — acknowledging that the content of the greater systems that we are embedded within can be traced through what is happening between us in the present. During the second half of the workshop we will generate scenic reenactments of earlier moments as gestures towards reinterpretation and integration. Some practices may resemble something akin to group therapy\, and while I am trained as a psychotherapist\, this is not therapy. The intent is towards thickening community\, intimacy\, and experimentation.

SUMMARY:June Flux Saturday: Tangled Vines
DESCRIPTION:For June Flux Saturday Governors Island Abby Cheney and Hanna Washburn invite you to join them in creating Tangled Vines\, a temporary installation made of reused and recycled materials happening at 404A Colonels Row.  \n\n\n\nThe installation will be an exquisite corpse of materials from our own studios\, MFTA\, found objects\, and items brought by collaborators or passersby. We will work across media\, primarily using fabric and string to stitch and tie everything together. The artwork will expand throughout the course of the day\, reaching through different rooms and out into the front lawn. \n\n\n\nWe invite anyone to bring any materials they wish to add to the installation to the island on Saturday\, June 24.
