SUMMARY:Sunday Painter
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Painter\nFlux Factory\, This location is wheelchair accessible. Attendees are expected to adhere to our safer space policy\, which is posted throughout the space. \n“David Lynch\, Sunday painter”\nCurated by Rory Fitzgerald Bledsoe & Nova Scott-James \nGallery Hours\nSaturdays & Sundays 1 – 6pm \nThursday & Friday\, April 25 & 26\, 1 – 6pm \nPlease RSVP on Facebook \nProgramming \nOpening of Sunday Painter\nFriday April 19\, 7 – 10 PM\nPerformances by various participating artists. \nFlux on the Floor\nThursday\, April 25\, 8 – 1am\nIn conjunction with Sunday painter (DJs will transcend the bounds of their typical performance). \nThe Great Flux Bake-Off\nSunday\, April 28\, noon – 6pm\nJoin us for Flux Factory’s inaugural baking competition! \n“Sunday Painter” is an exhibition that examines atypical mediums\, outside the scope of an artist’s conventional practice. The term “Sunday Painter” has historically referred to a painter who is unschooled or only paints in their spare time (typically on Sundays\, when free). This show subverts the idea of the hobbyist artist\, with the artist as hobbyist. \nFourteen Flux Factory artists (Catalina Alvarez\, Sholeh Asgary\, Danny Crump\, Sarah Dahlinger\, Dew\, Daniel Fishkin\, Rory Fitzgerald Bledsoe\, Cayla Lockwood\, Gil Lopez\, Rhonda Lowry\, Richard Nathaniel\, Nova Scott-James\, Jonathan Sims\, and Amia Yokoyama) utilize an alternative process or medium – beyond the purview of what they regularly show. Varying in medium\, the work universally feels more private\, intimate and/or vulnerable – a different kind of risk. Sunday Painter encapsulates the ethos of Flux – a place that encourages the artist to experiment\, cross-train and explore methods and processes that are inventive and unfamiliar.

SUMMARY:March Flux Thursday: Organizing Against Artwashing in Queens
DESCRIPTION:March Flux Thursday\nOrganizing Against Artwashing in Queens\nMarch 14th\ndinner at 7pm\nConversation at 8pm\nSpeakers:\nJustice for All Coalition\nQueens Neighborhoods United\nPriscilla Stadler\nDenae Howard presenting on her exhibition\, “You’re Welcome”\nArtists Studio Affordability Project \nLet us know you’re coming on Facebook\nThis event will take place in the Flux Factory Kitchen\, which is NOT wheelchair accessible. If you use a wheelchair and would like to come\, please let us know. We may be able to move it to the gallery\, which is accessible. Please email: jaime.iglehart@gmail.com \n\nFlux Thursday is a monthly potluck and artists salon for people to present their work and gather together for food and socializing. The event is free\, but please do bring food or drink to share! \n\nOrganizing Against Artwashing in Queens \n\n\nArtwashing is a term used to describe a process in which artists and arts organizations are strategically used in real estate development to disguise and mask gentrification. In artwashing\, opportunities for showcasing artwork\, free or subsidized studio space or ‘pop-up’ galleries and shops are offered to artists as part of real estate expansion projects\, while simultaneously long-time residents – the overwhelming majority of which are marginalized\, working class and people of color – are displaced from their homes due to rising rents and associated landlord harassment. \n\n\nAmazon may not be moving to Long Island City (or are they?)\, but with or without a corporate behemoth moving into our midst\, the question still remains for artists and arts communities in the neighborhood: How can artists work against the grain of Artwashing and ally themselves alongside neighborhood organizations fighting against displacement? \n\nThis Flux Thursday\, we want to turn our attention towards this issue. We will have short presentations from Queens-based organizations working to fight displacement\, as well as individuals\, followed by a group discussion to encourage learning and understanding around this.  If you are engaged in a practice to fight against artwashing and gentrification and would like to present\, or would like to recommend someone who is\, please email: jaime.iglehart@gmail.com

She has been diluted and adapted over time\, from empire to empire. What if water determined time instead of the clock? Anahita makes her return\, her known and forgotten qualities imagined as an installation of media\, sculpture and light. Working with Light as a medium\, is as close as one can come to traveling back through time. This is Anahita’s revenge against the mechanical apparatus of time\, the opening where she and memory meet to reconstruct a new story of travel and representation.\n\nSholeh Asgary is an Iranian-American multidisciplinary artist who references lens based media through sculpture\, painting\, installation and sound. Born in 1982 in Tehran\, she began crossing borders at 6 months old\, when her parents had to flee Iran to seek political refugee status. She spent the first few years of her life seeking asylum in various countries before accepted in the United States. Asgary earned her BA\, with a focus on photography and painting\, from San Francisco State University in 2007\, studied at the Accademia di belli Arti in Florence\, Italy in 2004\, and received an MFA in studio arts from Mills College in 2011. Her work has been shown in galleries and institutions internationally; Asgary’s sound work has been released by independent artist label: Cutty Strange Records\, has guest performed for experimental composer CTRL Z at Stanford University and Mills College in 2017\, and was a featured artist at the 2018 SoundWave Biennial. Asgary was a recipient of the 2014 Alternative Exposure Grant (Andy Warhol Foundation) for her programming initiatives\, when she was Curator/Director of Education/Public Programs at Incline Gallery (San Francisco)\, and where she founded The Project Room. She lives and works in Oakland\, where she is a photography professor at several Bay Area universities. She is a past resident of Krowswork (2016) and workshop participant of Guillermo Gomez-Peña’s La Pocha Nostra at SOMArts (2018)\, a current artist-in-residence at Flux Factory in Long Island City\, NY\, and resident at Wassaic Project (2019).\n

SUMMARY:OPEN CALL: TALK BACK
DESCRIPTION:“A gif of the words TALK BACK written in large\, block letters\, with colorful patterns changing over the letters. The background is yellow with red dots.” \n  \nFLUX FACTORY OPEN CALL- TALK BACK\nTALK BACK is supported by a generous grant from the NYC Cultural Affairs Disability Forward Fund. \nFLUX FACTORY is thrilled to announce TALK BACK\, Flux Factory’s first open call and exhibition specifically for artists and organizers with disabilities. \nDEADLINE: MONDAY MARCH 18th\, 11:59pm\nAPPLY HERE\n\nFor audio guidelines please go to www.fluxfactory.org/news/talk-back-audio\nFor PDF version of this Open Call\, please go to www.docdroid.net/BhQ57lx/talk-back-pdf.pdf\n \nTALK BACK seeks to center the lives and leadership of disabled artists and asserts that deep-rooted cultural changes must be made within the art world to become more inclusive and accessible. TALK BACK believes that disability must be included in conversations about diversity. One part of affecting change in the art world is by placing disabled artists in positions of influence within the arts to influence change from within.\n\nTALK BACK focuses on how contemporary artists with disabilities are presenting their work and invites disabled artists to submit work that dismantles systems of ableism\, either overtly or quietly. How do we examine\, interrogate\, and resist ableist and classists systems inside the art world? How can we employ the art world to examine social and cultural systems that surround disability outside the art world?\n\nTALK BACK imagines a reality yet to exist\, shifts able-normativity assumptions that every body is able-bodied\, illuminates non-binary futures from able to disabled and debunks disability and “heroism”. TALK BACK envisions and celebrates joy\, radical care\, sovereign bodies\, community building\, non-verbal and alternative forms of communication. TALK BACK disrupts through quiet protest\, individual\, overt and mass protest that includes multiple ways of showing up. TALK BACK works within and against Capitalism\, classism and medical ableism to redefine value\, productivity and worth. TALK BACK makes room for criticism\, restoration liberation\, coming out\, ownership of one’s mind and body\, access demands\, intersectionality and utopias to offer multiple entry points to TALK BACK.\n\nTALK BACK invites proposals for workshops\, performances\, gatherings\, walks\, spoken word\, screenings\, visual arts\, video\, sound works\, DIY\, panels\, grassroots\, poetry\, books\, installations\, zines\, artist talks\, performance lectures\, discussions\, events\, collaborations with your caregiver\, allies\, advocates\, support and service animals. Please know that TALK BACK is an an open call for artists and organizers with disabilities.\n\nDEADLINE: MONDAY MARCH 18th\, 11:59pm\nGo to TALK BACK application HERE\, thank you! \n\nImportant TALK BACK dates to note:\nOpen Call Closes: March 18\nInstallation Dates: May 6th – 8th\nOpening Date: Thursday May 9th \nClosing Date: June 2nd  \nDeinstallation Date: June 3rd and 4th\n\nParticipants will receive a small honorarium for their work and limited access to Materials for the Arts.\n\nFlux Factory gallery and ground floor bathroom is ADA Accessible. SUMMARY:Music Production For Everyone with PlayPlay
DESCRIPTION:Music Production For Everyone with PlayPlay \nSat February 2nd\n2pm-4pm\nFlux Gallery\, this location is wheelchair accessible \n\nShare the event on FB\nTo RSVP\, please email jadilday@gmail.com \nThe idea of being a music producer is often intimidating – who has money for a studio with a giant mixing board\, a sound-treated room and even the top software costs more than PlayPlay’s car. But there are ways to make music for free using just a laptop. In this two hour hands-on music production workshop\, PlayPlay will teach attendees how to make rhythms using just a laptop and a free web-based music making program\, Soundtrap. Expect to learn basic music production theory\, how to utilize loops\, how to make beats from scratch\, and how to arrange the elements of a song in a cohesive way. \nAttendees should bring a laptop with the Google Chrome browser installed if they want to participate in the hands-on portion\, but everyone is welcome to listen in! \nMore about PlayPlay \nPlayPlay is a DJ\, producer\, music scholar and activist interested in local music scenes\, dance floor dynamics\, queer theory\, and media studies. They have been teaching DJ’ing and music production for several years\, most recently through the UNC-Chapel Hill Music Department and Building Beats (NYC). With a particular investment in mentoring women and gender non-conforming DJs / producers\, PlayPlay has held workshops at festivals such as Moogfest\, for organizations such as Girls Rock NC\, and at various colleges & universities. A long-term artist-in-residence at Flux\, PlayPlay debuted their soundscape installation this past year\, focusing on the history of club music. In 2018\, they released music on labels such as Knightwerk Records\, Cybersonic LA\, and Worst Behavior Records\, and have two EPs scheduled for release this year.

Anastasia studied Electronic Music and Recording Media at Mills College. \n \n\nCal Fish (collaborators TBA) Living in different parts of New York my whole life\, I have been working to assert art as a necessarily productive social container and sound as a medium for communication with latent potential. Media ecology and acoustic ecology have been at the center of my text studies while I have practiced with interactive sound sculpture\, social scores\, and group movement. I have been involved in DIY art/music organizing around the U.S. and internationally for about six years. In current projects I have been focusing on making a specific place/community’s relationships between public space\, ecology\, and empathy audible through dynamic collaboration.\nMallie Sanford acknowledges and examines their body dysphoria\, hoarding tendencies\, andtoxic behaviors displayed in personal relationships through the use of fabric\, video\, performance and sound. The work represents the intense emotion emitted when making the work\, and the attempt to make the body and mind function as a genderless form. \n\n\n\n\nKwami Winfield\nThe trumpet indexes many things: the call of battle\, the cry of freedom\, the cool. By sight\, sound\, and (recently) by name\, it carries markedly varied significance. The trumpet is an amplifier. Human energy vibrates a column of air inside of the instrument and resonates in particular pitches. An amplifier takes an input signal and outputs a much louder signal with some degree of distortion or saturation\, the trumpet produces a harmonic distortion of the input signal. The trumpet is a machine with discreet and insular mechanics that are hidden to the eye but are vital to the sound product. My engagement with music and sound is not focused on the sound product\, but the process and prosody of musical play.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Visual Storytelling with Jaime Iglehart
DESCRIPTION:Saturday January 26th and Sunday January 27th\nNoon – 6pm\nPlease share this event with friends \nIn this 2 day workshop we will focus on the language of cinema by exploring shot choices and composition from throughout film history. We will then work with scripted scenes from our favorite films\, breaking up into teams to shoot the scenes with our own shot choices. At the end of the two day workshop\, we will screen our films alongside the original scenes as they were shot for Hollywood. We will compare their shot choices with our own and that of our classmates and discuss what choices were made and why. This exercise is meant to sharpen the director’s eye and will incorporate learning skill sets such as shot listing\, film producing and creating the bird’s eye shot diagram. \nThis workshop is free and open to 16 participants. All ages are welcome with adult supervision. Participants should plan on attending both Saturday and Sunday \n\nTo register\, email: jaime.iglehart@gmail.com\n\nJaime Idea Iglehart is a multimedia artist who earned her Master’s Degree in filmmaking from Columbia University\, and her Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking from Bard College. Her multi-media work incorporates experimental narrative films based in dream logic\, with expansions into interactive film-set installations and social sculpture interventions. \nImage Credit: Man With a Movie Camera\, by Dziga Vertov

The title is a reference to the collective conscience. In this case the theme of nationalism has informed the visual possibilities.\n“(nationalism)…is it an escapist indulgence that may doom human kind and the whole bio-sphere?”\n-Yoval N. Harrari

SUMMARY:Flux Thursday: Act Up. Sound Out.
DESCRIPTION:Act Up. Sound Out.\nThursday\, January 10th\nDinner at 7pm\nPresentations at 8pm\nFlux Gallery\, this location is wheelchair accessible \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLet us know you’re coming on Facebook \nYou are invited to Act Up. Sound Out. This month’s community potluck and art salon. The event is free\, but please do bring food or drink to share! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will take place in the Flux Factory Gallery\, which is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoundtable? Join us on the Sofreh\, a traditional Iranian backdrop that holds a feast\, a gathering\, a place to come together. Feast on the community Sofreh with a presentation of work by Yams Collective member Maureen Catbagan\, a presentation and surprise Amazon Jungle Gym performance by Jevijoe Vitug\, and a Weaponizing Sound presentation and workshop by Sholeh Asgary and Rachel Austin. The central microphone and stage will be open to all for the rest of the evening to pose pressing questions for discussion\, to sing a song\, or to share a story. What are the parameters that fail our experience today and what does it mean to be an artist within a larger community? How do we act up? Bring a spice or herb to create your own carbonated yogurt beverage. Participation is optional\, but we encourage you to Act Up\, Sound Out!    \nMaureen Catbagan is a Filippino-American\, multi-media artist based in Brooklyn whose work engages social collectivity\, examines relations between identity and experience\, and explores new forms of empowerments.  Collaborative projects include Abang-guard\, Flux Factory\, HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? collective\, and experimental music groups Bloodflames and PXALM. She is currently in post-production for her first feature film Lilly Galaxy. \nJevijoe Vitug’s project-based practice ranges from painting\, objects\, performance to community engaged work. Drawn from his personal experience as an immigrant who constantly moves from one place to another\, his projects are connected to the notion of reinvention amidst diversity of contradictions. \nBorn in 1977 in the Philippines and currently lives and works in New York\, Vitug’s processes focus on how to negotiate hybrid identities in response to constant change by creating a confluence of the past and the future\, dream and reality\, invisibility and visibility\, the local and the global. \nSholeh Asgary and Rachel Austin\, Weaponizing Sound\nSholeh Asgary is an Iranian born (1982)\, American multidisciplinary artist who references lens based media through sculpture\, painting\, installation and sound. Related to early somatic experiences and traumas of the diasporic condition\, her multidisciplinary works address the way objects create disambiguation and break down language and representation. Current artist-in-residence at Flux Factory. \nBorn in the backwoods of Virginia\, and living and working between New York and Belfast\, Rachel Austin is an interdisciplinary artist\, carving her name as an improviser\, songwriter\, and electronic composer. Austin’s electronic work exposes the links between sound and narrative — the abstract sounds we hear so often in improvisation and the words that lace the head when filled with sound. She sometimes creates pieces of divided sound and performance art\, art that intersects with the personal-political to create momentary space for suspension of auto-prescribed narratives. \nWeaponizing Sound is based on the idea that we may lack the vocabulary needed to adequately express self both locally and cross culturally. By becoming closer to our own utterances and vocalizations\, one will discover and develop new/alternative ways of communication sans vocabulary based on the verbal. Can this put us in touch with something unknown? Can a sound name a thing we have no name for? Is this enough? Weaponizing sound does not indicate to inflict pain on another. Quite the contrary. “Weaponizing” can be seen as an admittance of vulnerability.

SUMMARY:Sniff Out: Residency Exhibition by Bruno Silva
DESCRIPTION:SNIFF OUT\nDecember 13th – 16th\nOpening Reception/FLUX THURSDAY: December 13th\, 7pm – 10pm\nGallery Hours: December 13th –16th\, 4pm – 6pm\nor by contacting the artist s.brunomail@gmail.com \nSniff Out is an exhibition from Bruno Silva\, a current Flux Factory Artist-in-Residence. By wandering from space to space\, Bruno invites the visitor to stroll around the existing architectural and ambient features of Flux Factory. \nThe meeting point is the gallery space of Flux Factory. \nPlease join us on Thursday\, December 13th\, for our monthly community potluck and art salon: an informal time to catch up with old friends\, eat something delicious prepared by our artist-chefs\, and explore Bruno Silva’s exhibition Sniff Out.\nThe event is free\, but please do bring food or drink to share! \nPart of this event will take place in the Flux Factory kitchen\, which is up a long flight of stairs. Unfortunately\, this event is not wheelchair accessible. \nBio\nThe perceptual quality of things and the intensity of ordinary events are protagonists in the work of Bruno Silva. In his practice\, he lets himself be surrounded by forms\, observed or found according to moments of strolling\, personal experiences or random encounters that become the sources of his work. These characteristics found in everyday life lead the artist to determine a relationship between an object and its environment\, and voluntarily suspend the definition of the work in favor of memory and a form of collective speculation. Bruno Silva has recently exposed at ZZ Studio in Lyon (France) and at Cité Internationale des Arts\, Paris (France). He has also exposed at FELT Galleri\, Bergen (Norway)\, TARS Gallery in Bangkok (Thailand)\, Galeria do Sol in Porto (Portugal). Bruno realized residencies at Vivarium\, Rennes (France)\, Hordaland Kunstsenter\, Bergen (Norway) and at Residency Unlimited\, New-York. \nbruno-silva.eu
