SUMMARY:Chrysalis Kali: Pay Salutation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk and performance with Caroline Garcia and the Chrysalis Kali Collective.  \n\n\n\nPay Salutation is a somatic exploration of Kali – the national martial art of the Philippines\, also known as Arnis/Escrima/Eskrima. It is a system that emphasizes weapon-based fighting with sticks\, knives\, bladed weapons\, and various improvised weapons\, as well as “open hand” techniques. \n\n\n\nThis performance opens up a deeper dive into the potentials of Kali when one is not operating in the reactive modes of fight\, flight\, or freeze. It offers slowness as an aesthetic platform for somatic curiosity and assessment\, as well as offensive drills and combinations to demonstrate the importance of repetition and practice\, all useful techniques in the spectrum of healing collective trauma. \n\n\n\nPerformed by members of the Chrysalis Kali Collective (including Katrina Cabanban\, Caroline Garcia\, Kimberly Tate\, and founder\, Kristen Cabildo)\, they define themselves as “a group of Filipina/x women redefining power\, reclaiming ancestral wisdom\, and restoring resilience through the practice of Kali\, Filipino Martial Arts.”  \n\n\n\nThe program will start at 1:00PM with a 15 min performance followed by a conversation between Caroline Garcia\, the Chrysalis Kali Collective members and curator Natalia Nakazawa.  \n\n\n\nPerformers: Caroline Garcia\, Kristen Cabildo\, Katrina Cabanban\, Kimberly Tate \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for the event on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:The Autonomous Artist - An Artist Talk with Yon Mi Kim & Ariel Mercado
DESCRIPTION:An Artist Talk with Yon Mi Kim & Ariel Mercado\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAn afternoon conversation with Yon Mi Kim and Ariel Mercado two of the founding members of The Salon a New York City based cooperative. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Sunday February 19th for an afternoon conversation with Yon Mi Kim and Ariel Mercado two of the founding members of The Salon a New York City based cooperative comprised of working class artists of color. Together they will discuss the content of their featured work within the “The Voice of Many\, The Voice of One: Collective Actions for Resistance and Mutual Aid” show and the urgency of The Salon’s “The Autonomous Artist Manifesto” co-written together.  \n\n\n\nThe afternoon discussion will answer “what role does arts criticism play in creating a more equitable art world?”\, “in what ways does collectivizing support the survival of working class artists of color?” and “What effect does ontological warfare have on continued cultural production? How does contemporary artists combat it?” \n\n\n\nAriel Mercado is a Queer Black Nuyorican conceptual artist from the Bronx who explores the intersections of poetry and visual arts. Their work centers around the domestic space\, transcendental psychology\, consciousness\, the diaspora and ontology. They utilize ritual/performance work to highlight the responsibilities of audiences to artists\, consent\, and trust.  \n\n\n\nTheir work as a program designer & arts administrator is an extension of their arts practice.  \n\n\n\nYon Mi Kim is a first-generation Korean-American artist\, writer\, and educator from Queens\, NY. She uses photography\, sculpture\, poetry\, and installation to explore ideas around domesticity\, family\, memory\, and trauma – weaving together the chasm between intimacy and alienation; love and grief. \n\n\n\nRSVPs to this event on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Feralpy OPEN CALL
DESCRIPTION:Feralpy is a radical and untamed exploration of experimental forms of therapy by artists curated by Jemila MacEwan and Amelia Heintzelmann for Flux Factories summer programming. Taking place on Governors Island over consecutive weekends over the summer this wild and free-range exhibition is open to performances\, meditations\, classes\, installations\, video work\, and one-on-one experiences offered by artists. \n\n\n\nThese events will take place over a series of weekends grouped as following \n\n\n\n– Workshops/participatory/experiential projects \n\n\n\n– Films/video works for in person screening \n\n\n\n– Live performances – music\, dance\, multimedia etc. \n\n\n\nIn addition to this\, we will have an exhibition that is an archive of processes. We are accepting works appropriate for exhibition with a focus on process\, documentation of previous events\, instructive writing etc. \n\n\n\nTraditional forms of talk therapy can often be problematic\, unsuitable or inaccessible for many reasons. As a matter of personal and creative survival\, many artists have developed their own unique therapeutic practices that utilize aspects of their creative processes. These experimental forms of therapy are often born out of a need for distinct creative methods for working through the specific needs of coping with neuro-divergency\, trauma\, queerness\, high sensitivity\, and alienation which are common experiences for artists. In Feralpy we get curious about these free-range healing practices and invite artists to share them with a wider audience in an accessible\, stigma-free\, and donation-based format. \n\n\n\nThrough its open call for artists\, Feralpy invites those who have discovered therapeutic value in their art to offer their skills and expertise to others. We also welcome work that has been created through critical examination of existing therapies\, or would be meaningfully illuminated when viewed through the context of therapeutic practice. Each artist will be free to design and facilitate their own approach to the topic\, creating a diverse and multifaceted experience for attendees. We hope that through sharing this often invisible and deeply considered aspect of artists’ work attendees will be empowered to explore and experiment with creating their own personally tailored therapeutic practices.  \n\n\n\nTo apply please fill the Google form

SUMMARY:June Flux Saturday: Tangled Vines
DESCRIPTION:For June Flux Saturday Governors Island Abby Cheney and Hanna Washburn invite you to join them in creating Tangled Vines\, a temporary installation made of reused and recycled materials happening at 404A Colonels Row. \n\n\n\nThe installation will be an exquisite corpse of materials from our own studios\, MFTA\, found objects\, and items brought by collaborators or passersby. We will work across media\, primarily using fabric and string to stitch and tie everything together. The artwork will expand throughout the course of the day\, reaching through different rooms and out into the front lawn. \n\n\n\nWe invite anyone to bring any materials they wish to add to the installation to the island on Saturday\, June 24. We will also have materials on hand for anyone to use. \n\n\n\nThe work will be constructed on Saturday and will be on view through 5pm on Sunday\, June 25. \n\n\n\nAbby Cheney\, abbycheney.com \n\n\n\nHanna Washburn\, hannawashburn.com

SUMMARY:Feralpy Workshops and Performances
DESCRIPTION:Join Flux for an afternoon of workshops and performances in conjunction with the Feralpy Group Exhibition. View more event details and RSVP for workshops and performances at Eventbrite. \n\n\n\nWorkshops:11am-4pm: Watching Sheep Workshop with Hannah Lutz WinklerIn Watching Sheep\, I will lead one-on-one sessions in which I shepherd the participant towards a state of heightened attention\, focusing deeply on the five sheep that spend the summer on Governor’s Island. Techniques employed in this feralpeutic process may include interactive rituals\, mugwort tea\, sculptural objects\, flexible instructions\, and/or touching wool.12pm-1:30pm: Touch Study Workshop with Leah FournierIn this workshop/experiential practice\, we apply basic empathy to develop intuitive touch. Following a simple\, guided body work score\, this workshop asks first for participants to therapize themselves to understand tone\, quality\, structure\, and time. What does it feel like with my thumb here\, and how much pressure in this spot is not enough\, too much\, just right? With that information\, we can move into partnered bodywork (IF DESIRED) and practice honest and frequent feedback to offer//receive one another’s touch.12pm-6pm: Transformation Masks with Tyler Kline and Megan BridgeTransformation MasksRainbow Iridescent Glitter SkinTo excite the blood withinFluid Movement is the Taskto empower this sly and expressive Talisman’s Mask \n\n\n\nPerformances:1pm-6pm: Performances with Feralpy Artists \n\n\n\nSet by Jemila MacEwan & Jack Helfrich \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSoul Cymatics by Jennifer Pyron“Soul Cymatics promotes deep listening awareness through breathing and humming exercises. Benefits include positive circulation throughout your nervous system to calm your responses to stimuli.” \n\n\n\nBind by Riven Ratanavanh“Bind/unbind” is a meditation on the body’s entanglements to place\, history\, and time. \n\n\n\nCeremony by Rebecca KellyG“Ceremony” is an interactive sound experience for identifying and releasing our conditioned beliefs for our personal and collective liberation facilitated by Rebecca KellyG. This session includes live vocal soundscapes\, guided meditation\, and intuitive movement. Please wear comfortable clothes and something to write/draw with if that supports your process of integrating information. \n\n\n\nwe were never meant to survive by Ülkü ÇağlayanThis is a participatory performance exploring themes of eroticism\, death\, and the radical togetherness with a particular focus on the role of desire in revolt. Using the Erotic as Power\, as a psychological and philosophical weapon\, a remedy to restore our senses\, the process will focus on mental & emotional preparation for death and dying together. By incorporating narrative construction and participatory nature of the body\, we will imagine humanity on a battlefield; in the state of being on the edge; a state of about-to-die. This work is influenced by teachings of queer performance artist\, Keith Hennessy and gives references to Audre Lorde\, Bataille and Byung Chul Han’s concepts of dissolution into the Other.

SUMMARY:Feralpy Workshops and Performances
DESCRIPTION:Join Flux for an afternoon of workshops and performances in conjunction with the Feralpy Group Exhibition. View more event details and RSVP for workshops and performances at Eventbrite. \n\n\n\nWorkshop:2pm-6pm: Group-as-a-whole Workshop with Julia GladstoneGroup-as-a-whole theory posits that when individuals form a group\, the resulting union becomes an entity in its own right with a sum greater than its parts. We will apply both experiential and meta-analysis of our “groupness” together through embodied investigations\, scores\, and LARPing. We will focus on the “here and now“ as a lens through which to uncover underlying themes and dynamics of power\, care\, ambivalence\, desire\, etc. — acknowledging that the content of the greater systems that we are embedded within can be traced through what is happening between us in the present. During the second half of the workshop we will generate scenic reenactments of earlier moments as gestures towards reinterpretation and integration. Some practices may resemble something akin to group therapy\, and while I am trained as a psychotherapist\, this is not therapy. The intent is towards thickening community\, intimacy\, and experimentation.

SUMMARY:Feralpy Workshops and Performances
DESCRIPTION:Join Flux for an afternoon of workshops and performances in conjunction with the Feralpy Group Exhibition. View more event details and RSVP for workshops and performances at Eventbrite. \n\n\n\nWorkshops:12pm-6pm: Feel Like an Island Today? Freeform Drawing and Collage Workshop with Cayla Lockwoodyour feelings and assembling your thoughts alone/together with Flux Factory. This lightly guided workshop will provide prompts and materials for therapeutic drawing and collage-making. Our efforts from the day will be compiled into a group ocean or choose to work on your own private island. Take it easy\, come and go as you please. All ages welcome and no skills required.1pm-2pm\, 3pm-4pm & 5pm-6pm: How to Hold on While Letting Go Workshop with Jemma Rose BrownTo fly a kite\, stand with your back to the wind. Start with a short\, tight line. As the kite catches air\, you’ll feel a small tug. Only let the line out very slowly. Let go too quickly\, and the kite will swirl\, loose and crumpled\, to the ground. \n\n\n\nFor this guided workshop\, we will be making and flying kites with the names of emotions that we need to grasp before we can fully release. Collectively\, we’ll hold on\, and then we’ll let the wind and the slack of the line and one another help us to let them go.2pm-4pm: The School for Anything Workshop with Jonathan Matthews-GuzmánThe School for Anything : Positively Thoughtful\, Self-Performatively Studied Stim Circle / or\, “casting a w i d e net” / or\, Constructing a “minimal trash h e a p ” . \n\n\n\nLifted from their work with elementary school ages as well as their sensibly paradoxical existence in this lifetime as an multi-disciplinary artist who also identifies in this lifetime as a multi-racial\, genderfree(fluid)\, and neuroplastic(divergent) person\, Jonathan Matthews-Guzmán \, or Schrōdinger\, will facilitate a time-space in which all are welcome to share and receive the results of “both/and” thinking. \n\n\n\nWe begin with a grounding and trust building welcome circle\, punctuated by a musical talisman (instrument)\, that may be employed for sonic purposes\, or held onto for grounding and presence. \n\n\n\nWe ask ourselves and our community what we need\, and manifest an actionable artistic happenstance to serve as the macrocosm for our microcosm\, accepting its mere impermanence on this sphere we call home for only so long and so forth. \n\n\n\nThe result could be anything\, but we are headed towards an anarchist dismantling of opera as a Gesamtkunstwerk\, or “total art form” \, towards a facsimile of life itself in which there are expressive tools to cope with life’s left turns – essentially\, a fully improvised opera\, or “life” itself\, however\, in tender loving community (lovingly referred to as a “minimal trash heap”). \n\n\n\nAnything goes\, as long as your intentions are prepared and pure\, a process we will come to know as we embark on this journey together. \n\n\n\nPerformances:12pm-6pm: Open House with Laurel AtwellDuring these two days\, we shall open the house to whatever may come. We will gather\, establish our rules of engagement\, assess the group mood\, and embark on an experience together. Anything can shift at any time: we can go from sharing our dreams to crafting to performing a play to learning a dance to taking a silent walk. The time is ours\, we will begin with the unknown\, and invite what wishes to appear. As facilitator\, I will have options to pull from my bag of tricks\, but I encourage everyone to show up open to stepping in and out of roles within the group. If you feel inspired\, bring something to share (could be anything: food\, a book\, an image\, an oracle\, a song)\, wear comfortable clothes\, and feel free to come and go throughout the time. Looking forward to being with you. Inspired by the work and study of Process as Guide with Melanie Maar.12pm-6pm: Doing Nothing Together with Hey There KapplowDoing Nothing Together is an accountability container for practicing pause and presence\, collectively\, in resistance to perfectionist culture. It helps people build their capacity to reject the pressure and debilitating effects of unnecessary urgency. Four 30-minute sample sessions will occur throughout the course of the day at 12pm\, 2pm\, 4pm and 6pm. The experience is offered at no cost\, but because the facilitator has traveled from Boston\, unpaid\, to host this experience\, donations are gratefully accepted. While watching the film\, the viewer’s eyes are constantly drawn left and right across the screen: a flying bird\, a ferry leaving the harbor\, bonfire smoke wafting\, a crab rolling. A soundscape pans left to right in time with the visuals. \n\n\n\n“Grief is…” and can I keep it in my pocketbook?\, by Shiloah Symone ColeyThe experimental animations\, “Grief is…” and can I keep it in my pocketbook?\, grew out of interviews with my mother and maternal grandmother\, Wanna. The interview process is a method for understanding\, connection\, and unearthing the unsaid or unheard. “Grief is…” bears witness to grief through the lens of two women. can I keep it in my pocketbook? started with family photo archiving\, grew to community archiving\, and explores a shared feeling – from the interior to the exterior. With deep gratitude\, I thank all those who trusted me with a piece of their family archive. To my mother and Wanna\, I love you endlessly\, forever\, and always. \n\n\n\nN Site by Rebecca PatekKey concepts and research will be presented addressing questions such as: \n\n\n\nIs there a physical site within the brain which\, if stimulated\, leads to emotional healing? Can this physical space be accessed and stimulated through movement? \n\n\n\nIs the body a repository of stored trauma\, a flesh passageway to freedom\, or a laboratory for direct observation of cause and effect? \n\n\n\nCan we undo consequences of bad decisions through a kind of willful amnesia? How can we make it like it never ever happened? We can’t because time seems to only move in one direction. Why does time go only one way and why is that way towards chaos? \n\n\n\nthe audience will leave the presentation with tangible and concrete tools to pursue their own healing.5pm-6pm: Film Screening and Performances with Feralpy ArtistsLZ GrandersonNova Scott JamesBlack Butoh\, loud visuals of silence by LZ GrandersonBlack Butoh is an experimental\, movement-based short film using the Japanese art form of Butoh to navigate the anxieties of being a Black man in the United States. \n\n\n\nIn an article titled “Raising a Black Boy to Not Be Afraid\,” Nicole Fleetwood navigates an all-too-familiar narrative for parents raising 12-year-old black boys in the US— one filled with\, well\, fear. The one-liner that triple-dog-dared me to make Black Butoh\, read\, “The violence done to Tamir Rice [sic] was not only his death but the silencing of his voice.” Black Butoh asks if the black body can speak for the voices that have been silenced. And like raising a Black boy to not be afraid in the US— it tries it’s damned hardest. \n\n\n\nBlack Butoh\, in many ways\, outlines the mounting tension leading up to recent protest. Like Butoh\, It’s mourning\, it’s triumph\, it’s fear in celebration\, it’s a call to action\, it’s anxiety filled bones\, it’s dynamic\, it’s still\, it’s life before death\, indeed\, it is a peephole into life itself. \n\n\n\nNova: A New Spelling of My Name by Nova Scott-JamesA young artist\, born as Nicole\, but renamed Nova\, sets out on a healing journey on an indigenous sanctuary in upstate New York. Accompanied by the Wild Darlings\, a black + queer\, healing arts collective\, she transmutes the trauma of her past by performing in white-face as the male teacher that sexually abused her as a child. Premiered at Camden International Film Festival 2021\, screenings: 427\, ARoS Kunstmuseum.

We’ll explore a series of site-specific scores developed to guide participants through embodied listening and creative collaboration — listening and responding to the inner as well as the outer world. By practicing these non-verbal modes of care and conversation with self and other\, we aim to cultivate a sense of presence and shared resonance.2pm-4pm: BIG FEEL DANCE Movement workshop with Nicole MannarinoDO YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE MORE FREEDOM IN YOUR BODY THROUGH DANCE? \n\n\n\nDO YOU WANT TO BE PART OF A HIGH ENERGETIC WORKSHOP WITH OTHERS? \n\n\n\nJoin NYC based artist Nicole Mannarino for her BIG FEEL DANCE workshop where we will gather in community for an energizing and invigorating movement experience. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome\, no previous movement experience necessary to attend. \n\n\n\nWear comfortable clothes and shoes you can move in.2pm-5pm: Tree+OysterAn interactive installation that aims to cultivate cultural intimacy through intersectional decolonization practices\, Tree+Oyster create ritual loops to stoke embodied memory and resist historical erasure. Through myth making and tool use\, they facilitate small groups in building bridges from land to sea\, imagining sustainable ecologies. \n\n\n\nWith the aim to cultivate space for collective trust and shared dreaming\, Tree+Oyster arrive with non verbal communication and play to shed anthropocentric perspective and facilitate opportunities for emergent ritual. \n\n\n\nTree+Oyster merge archipelagic Indigenous mythologies from the Dominican Republic and the Philippines in order to stoke memory\, resist erasure\, and generate new mythologies. With curiosity to discover cross-cultural parallels in land-water relationship between Indigenous communities and their own personal decolonization research\, T+O engage in immersive research deepening their relationship to land and community. From this foundation\, they facilitate creative gatherings bridging inner and outer ecologies — a practice in tuning our personal\, communal\, and digital relationship to the landscape. \n\n\n\nSite-specific gatherings consist of co-creation exercises and games\, sensorial ceremonies\, body mapping\, collective altar building\, and musical forest jams. Seasonal elements\, i.e. sand\, soil\, and vegetation\, inform the location and structure of interactive installations. These onsite activations create a generative mediated space for communal storytelling. Rooted in the study of Indigenous histories\, local-to-global community\, and ecology\, Tree+Oyster aim to build a cross-cultural campfire generating warmth\, in empathetic pursuit of sustainability.4pm-6pm: “Bring Your Own Brat” Workshop with Sacha Vega“Bring Your Own Brat” stems from the craving to perform a tantrum in the face of conditioned modes of being\, moving\, and seeing. The workshop is facilitated by Sacha Vega and is part of ongoing studio experiments in expressions of personal needs. Through a series of shared movement exercises and writing prompts we will explore the archetype of the brat as a means to probe at moralized choreographies in our lives. Whether your brat emerges through foot stomping\, vocal exclamation\, a written decree\, or total refusal – all are welcome. No previous dance or performance experience necessary.

The group generates knowledge and resources\, anchored together in cooperation and collaboration. Bringing Worlds Together: A Rethinking Residencies Reader is the first anthology on art residencies published in the United States. It is a companion to the Rethinking Residencies Symposium\, which invited artists\, curators\, scholars\, and residency organizations to address residency programs as critical sites of research and production within the visual arts. The eleven essays and three conversations in Bringing Worlds Together reflect on art residencies at present—at a time when residencies play a critical role in art’s ecosystem. They address a cross-section of ideas about residency programs\, bound together by a deep concern for the care and ethics that go into shaping residency programs and hosting artists and curators. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCommissioning Editor: Rethinking Residencies \n\n\n\nEditors: Kari Conte and Susan Hapgood \n\n\n\nAuthors: Nova Benway\, Eve Biddle\, Jamie Blosser\, Tania Candiani\, Viviana Checchia\, Kari Conte\, Christina Daniels\, Robin Everett\, Dylan Gauthier\, Susan Hapgood\, Galen Joseph-Hunter\, Jeffrey Kasper\, Irmeli Kokko\, Catherine Lee\, Eileen Jeng Lynch\, Sally Mizrachi\, Howardena Pindell\, Sanna Ritvanen\, Nat Roe\, Mierle Laderman Ukeles\, and Nicholas Weist \n\n\n\nGraphic Design: Esen Karol \n\n\n\nSize: 8 ½ x 5 ½ inches \n\n\n\nPage Count: 128 \n\n\n\nPublication Date: August 13\, 2023 \n\n\n\nEdition Number: 1st edition \n\n\n\nISBN: 978-1-7320876-3-7 \n\n\n\nPrice: $25 USD Paperback and Free Digital PDF and EPUB \n\n\n\nHard copies can be purchased here. \n\n\n\nDigital publication: rethinkingresidencies.org

SUMMARY:All That Is Seen And Unseen Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join Flux for an Artist Talk with Amelia Marzec in conjunction with their exhibition\, “All That Is Seen And Unseen.” \n\n\n\nFor additional information: ameliamarzec.com \n\n\n\n“All That Is Seen And Unseen\,” a solo art exhibition by Amelia Marzec at Flux Factory on Governors Island\, opens Saturday August 19\, 2pm-5pm. The exhibition presents a collection of objects on the topic of a “queer technological Eastern European diaspora.” \n\n\n\nThe installation includes: shrines that broadcast coming out stories over Family Radio Service; a typeface inspired by an AI’s opinion of early Slavic writing systems; a sculpture that listens for military aircraft through a radio hidden in a folk art ceiling decoration; and digital photographs that depict the body in ritual garments from Pagan marriage and Catholic priesthood. \n\n\n\nSoftware with imagery based on traditional papercuts\, depicting women’s bodies\, weapons\, and pre-Christian symbols\, will be shown. It will also be projected on church buildings and institutional architecture during the run of the show\, in conjunction with the Island Luminaria exhibition. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, a virtual reality piece will be presented at Harvestworks. It is a walking simulator filled with impotent paper-doll tanks. \n\n\n\nAmelia Marzec is a Brooklyn-based artist engaging with communications infrastructure to inform a speculative future. Her work has been exhibited at SIGGRAPH\, MIT\, ISEA (Canada)\, University of the Arts Helsinki (Finland)\, ONCE Foundation Contemporary Art Biennial (Spain)\, NODE Forum for Digital Arts Biennial (Germany)\, and is part of the Rhizome ArtBase. She was a resident at Eyebeam\, Ox-Bow\, and Harvestworks; a fellow at NYSCA/NYFA\, A.I.R. Gallery\, and Columbia University; a visiting artist at CalArts; and nominated for the World Technology Awards for Art. She holds an MFA in Design and Technology from Parsons\, and a BFA from Mason Gross. \n\n\n\n@ameliapractice \n\n\n\n#allthatisseenandunseen \n\n\n\nwww.ameliamarzec.com

SUMMARY:Artists Formerly Known as Prints Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join Flux for the opening of the Artists Formerly Known as Prints exhibition. \n\n\n\nAugust 26-October 1\, 2023Location: Upstairs\, Colonels Row House 404AOpening: Saturday\, August 26 12-6pm \n\n\n\nThe idea for this show began with a group of artists who at some point considered themselves to be printmakers. As their practices have evolved to include conceptually driven multi-faceted projects and access to facilities have come and gone their prints have often taken a back seat\, tacked up in a corner or shoved away in a cardboard box. This exhibition is an opportunity to embrace the playful discoveries inherent in the printmaking process and showcase prints that these artists might not typically prioritize. \n\n\n\nIn printmaking\, when an image is transferred from a matrix to a new surface (often paper) there is a suspenseful\, yet magical moment of transformation and the artist lets go of control of the image giving it fully over to the process. For centuries artists have been producing prints\, often editions of prints\, that run parallel to their primary practices. Perhaps\, this trusting of the process is part of what has drawn them to do so. Printmaking allows for a materially driven thought process which can generate imagery and ideas in a physical and freeing manner. A type of thinking which artists in the flux community apply to all types of making. Artists Formerly Known as Prints celebrates these printmakerly works that often get brushed to the side. \n\n\n\nEvents:2-5pmThis Saturday from 2-5pm\, Jonathan Sims will be at the Flux Island space sharing The Elements\, a newly emerging and constantly evolving form of divination/fortune-telling. This cleromantic system uses dice to generate random numbers and translates them into universal themes\, inviting participants to interact with abstract form\, themselves\, and each other. \n\n\n\nParticipating Artists:Itala Aguilera\, Amir Badawi\, Maureen Catbagan\, Abby Cheney\, Sarah Dahlinger\, Christina Freeman\, Caitlin Foley\, Louis Leung\, Cayla Lockwood\, Jemila MacEwan\, Caitlin & Misha\, Will Owen\, Ethan Shoshan\, Jonathan Sims\, Tray Tsui\, Sally Beauti Twin\, Roopa Vasudevan\, Asya Yaschenko\, Jevijoe Vitug.

Through ink and wash experiments\, the artist breaks through the limitations of traditional ink forms to explore new possibilities of artistic creation. Leung’s practice is centered on trial\, patience and inquiry while playing with motifs of time and space. His ink paintings depart from the usual and mundane\, offering a glimpse of a leap-frog like imagination. By resolving\, refining and rebuilding unique visual images\, a spontaneity emerges\, representative of his inner and outer world on paper. \n\n\n\nLeung graduated from the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and is now a Hong Kong graphic and visual artist. His artwork Between:- has won the “2019 UOB Ink Art of the Year Award” and Gold Award\, Landscape or Figurative (Open Category) at the year 2019 UOB Art in Ink Awards; while his another artwork Amidst:- has been selected for the “Ink Global 2020 Exhibition”. SUMMARY:The Epileptic Eye Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join Flux for an artist talk in conjunction with The Epileptic Eye group show. The Epileptic Eye is a groundbreaking exhibition showcasing the work of women artists living with epilepsy from around the world in order to raise awareness and create a dialogue through the empowering platform of the arts. \n\n\n\nShort films that have been selected in festivals around the world\, photography\, installation\, and crochet by artists Sally Cinnamon (Canada)\, Cintamani Calise (UK-USA-Italy)\, Cristina Breazu (France – Romania) and Malo Sutra Fish (France – USA) form this rare exhibition. \n\n\n\nThis show invites the public to enter an immersive\, tactile space opening a discussion regarding our personal and shared experiences of this neurological condition. Our art\, inextricably impacted by our condition\, became our tool to communicate to others about the paradoxes rising from having epilepsy. \n\n\n\nIn this setting\, we open our perspective on life with this common condition\, and the art practices that form in response to it. We bring to light the transcendence that visits and motivates our survival together. The crushing contrast of our experiences with epilepsy – the way it can bring us to the edges of consciousness in a beautiful\, fragile\, frightening way – this is what we display.

SUMMARY:September Flux Saturday - Dirty Signs
DESCRIPTION:Even though dirt is where our food comes from\, is where our bodies get buried when we die\, and is literally everywhere we go\, it is not represented yet in the emoji universe. Somehow we have emojis for unicorns\, pufferfish\, poodles and Santa Claus\, but not dirt! Dirty Time is planning to try to correct this oversight and will be submitting a proposal for a dirt emoji to the Unicode foundation in 2024.  \n\n\n\nDirty Signs is an exhibition of international artist responses to the idea of emojifying dirt\, featuring works by B a r b a r a Schneider\, Daniel S. DeLuca\, Ed Woodham\, Gustavo Gómez-Mejía\, IPRAMENE\, Lee Tusman\, Liz Nofziger\, M Greenwald\, Maia Liebeskind\, Noelle Salaun\, Renée Crowley\, Sarah Dahlinger and Vidya Giri in 2D\, 3D and 4D formats. Dirty Time will also be collecting visitor suggestions for a potential dirt emoji through a “think tank” installation within the exhibition\, and several participatory activities on September 30. \n\n\n\nDirty Signs runs from September 23 – October 1 2023\, with a rousing closing event including live performances by Sarah Dahlinger and Ed Woodham on September 30 from 1-5pm. \n\n\n\nDirty Time is Hey There Kapplow and Walker Tufts. We have been investigating the impossibility of cleanliness since 2021 and we’ve dug up a dirty little secret: there’s no clean that’s not dirty. \n\n\n\nDirt feeds you and eats you. Dirt is your companion and your portal to the past and the future. We’re here to help you recognize your glorious\, delicious dirtiness and your connection to all time through dirt.
