SUMMARY:Fluctuations with Georgia Muenster
DESCRIPTION:Fluctuations is an evening of video art featuring works by current Fluxers-in-Residence at the ARoS atelier. Fluctuations\, beyond the Flux pun embedded in the title\, is themed on change and collaboration\, while taking cues from the Situationist International: How do Fluxers together interact with the city\, collaborate within this environment\, or disrupt the day-to-day? The screening will also include collective works from Flux Factory’s previous times in Aarhus\, notably Jaime Iglehart’s Public Broad Fluxing\, from the “Infamous Outpost of the Semi-Legitimate Nation of Flux” exhibition at Spanien 19C in 2012. \nThe event is curated by Georgia Muenster. Georgia is a New York-born and London-based independent contemporary art curator with a focus on urbanism\, video\, and collectivity\, and she has been a member of Flux Factory since 2008. SUMMARY:Live Zones with Ben Seretan
DESCRIPTION:Slowly unfurling clouds of tones\, swirling drones\, and other lovely sounds conjured up right before your eyes – a live set of music you could lie on the floor for by notable US ambient musician Ben Seretan. \nBen Seretan is a musician and writer from Troy\, New York who is working hard. In 2018\, he released a 24 hour long album of guitar clouds called My Life’s Work. In 2020 came Youth Pastoral\, a lightly dance music influenced collection of cathartic full band jammers about breaking up with God (named one of the best albums of the year by Pitchfork). This year  – emerging from the Internet as if a 17-year burrow in the woods – Seretan whipped up Cicada Waves\, a set of piano recordings from the riotous and cacophonous woods of north Georgia where\, more often than not\, the piano isn’t played. And every Thursday he sends a new track and a 1\,000 word piece of writing via My Big Break\, a hard-to-describe email newsletter. \nbenseretan.com\ninstagram.com/benseretan\nbenseretan.bandcamp.com\ntwitter.com/BenSeretan

SUMMARY:Book Release: History of Solar Power Art
DESCRIPTION:Alex Nathanson will be celebrating the release of his new book A History of Solar Power Art and Design. He will be joined by NYC-based artists and designers working with solar power whose work is featured in the book\, including Ted Victoria and Benedetta Piantella. \nThe book\, which was recently published by Routledge\, examines the history of creative applications of photovoltaic (PV) solar power\, including sound art\, wearable technology\, public art\, industrial design\, digital media\, building integrated design\, and many others. \nThe growth in artists and designers incorporating solar power into their work reflects broader social\, economic\, and political events. As the cost of PV cells has come down\, they have become more accessible and have found their way into a growing range of design applications and artistic practices. As climate change continues to transform our environment and becomes a greater public concern\, the importance of integrating sustainable energy technologies into our culture grows as well. \nThe book is available directly from publisher and most book retailers. Use code FLY21 for a 20% discount when ordering directly from the publisher. \nAlex Nathanson is a multimedia artist\, designer\, technologist\, and educator. His work is primarily focused on exploring both the experimental and practical applications of sustainable energy technologies\, particularly photovoltaic solar power. His work has been featured at Issue Project Room (NYC)\, the Museum of the Moving Image (NYC)\, Anthology Film Archives (NYC)\, Film Society of Lincoln Center (NYC)\, Dome of Visions (Copenhagen\, Denmark)\, and the Art Prospect Festival (St. Petersburg\, Russia). He was one of the long-term artists in residence at Flux Factory\, in Queens\, NY from 2012 to 2016\, and his multi-media performance group Fan Letters was awarded residencies at The Watermill Center in 2017 and 2019. Solar Protocol\, a collaboration with Tega Brain and Benedetta Piantella\, was awarded a fellowship at Eyebeam in 2020. As a solar power designer\, he has created interactive and educational projects for The Climate Museum\, Peabody Essex Museum\, Solar One\, and the NYC Department of Education\, among others. Most recently\, his book A History of Solar Power Art and Design was published by Routledge. (https://alexnathanson.com)

He seeks to understand the textural and structural possibilities that cement has to offer. The paintings are abstract and organic. They resemble whatever the viewer sees\, like looking at clouds\, you’re interpretation is right\, but only partially. what do you see? Alien landscapes\, vaginas or slushice? \n“Jevi From 9 to 11” by Carlos David TC is a fictionalized documentary directed by Carlos David TC and featuring artist Jevijoe Vitug. Inspired by Agnes Varda’s “Cleo from 5 to 7\,” the short film follows Jevi\, a New York based Filipino painter\, as he makes his way from his small studio in New York to the museum where he works 5 days a week as a security guard during the COVID-19 pandemic. A preview screening of an unfinished version of the film will premiere in the auditorium at ARoS Museum\, on September 15 ahead of its New York premiere in October and will be followed by a Q&A with online attendance by Jevijoe Vitug. \nCarlos David TC is a video artist and experimental filmmaker based in NYC. Born in Venezuela and raised in Miami\, his work explores identity in the digital space\, coming of age in the era of reality tv\, and mobile content creation as a means of communication. His practice uses documentation to produce self-portraits that are then presented via moving image\, screenshots\, films\, memes\, music videos\, performance and site specific installations. \nThis event is made possible (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Carlos David TC is is one of 500 New York City-based artists to receive a grant by the City Artist Corps Grants program\, presented by The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA)\, with support from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) as well as Queens Theatre. Website: www.carlosdavidtc.com || IG: @carlosdavidtc \n“Soulitate”\, by Shubhdeep Singh ParwanaA political feel-good film from a street corner in Aarhus\, where a chai bar becomes a social experiment beyond the echo chambers of the 2019 elections in Denmark. Here\, you could enjoy a cup of chai and a chat with someone who might not resemble you in terms of opinions and appearance. In response to a political debate that rapidly turned black-and-white\, soulitate is a wonderful reminder of how much we actually have in common – and how much we can learn from each other when we engage with and listen to each other.

SUMMARY:Screening: "The Wake" and "Nova: A New Spelling of My Name" with Jemila MacEwan and Nova Scott-James
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the ARoS Public theater for a screening of two new films by Flux Artists-in-Residence. \nThe Wake \nIn this program MacEwan will walk audiences through strategies for responding to ecological grief and overwhelm. We will be guided through an empathetic eco-morphic approach to making sense of humanity’s role and responsibilities within the larger network of indwellers with whom we share this planet. The program will begin with a screening of MacEwan’s film ‘The Wake’. \n‘The Wake’ (2019) is a performance-art film about environmental grief. In the film\, Europe’s largest glacier Vatnajökull is melting and its wisdom teeth have become unrooted. The protagonist attempts to restore the teeth but eventually succumbs to the irreparability of the situation. After all hope is lost\, one of the teeth speaks to the protagonist\, in Icelandic (voiced by an eight-year-old girl) and offers counsel. The wisdom tooth’s sense of time and memory seem confused\, but their capacity for compassion is boundless. \nThe film screening will be followed by a creative writing workshop. In this workshop MacEwan invites participants to imagine what a personal treaty with the planet might look like. Treaties are written as law binding agreements between two parties or more for the purpose of sharing resources\, mutual recognition\, and peaceful co-existence. Many of the treaties that exist around the world today that involve colonial entities are routinely breached for corporate and political interest\, and the individuals for whom these treaties represent have little power to protest these violations. \nIn this workshop MacEwan will work with participants to imagine what a personal treaty with the land on which they reside and with our planet might look like. A personal treaty returns agency back to the individual to form their own guidelines for acting in mutual interest with the more-than-human world and honor their own agreements. \nJemila MacEwan is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in New York. MacEwan is known for their intimately interwoven earthworks\, sculptures\, films and performances that build a contemporary mythology of meteorites\, volcanoes\, prehistoric super-fungi and melting glaciers. These stories engage with the emotional complexity of humanity’s destructive impact\, to the planet and to itself\, as a way to understand what it means to be human within the Holocene Extinction. \nNova: A New Spelling of My Name \nAfter “The Wake” we will screen the new short film “Nova: A New Spelling of My Name” to be followed by an in-person Q&A with the director and star of the film Nova Scott-James. A young artist\, born Nicole but renamed Nova\, sets out on a healing journey on an indigenous Taino sanctuary in upstate New York. Directed by Nova Scott-James; produced by Flor Tejada\, Todd Carter\, Abou Farman; Cinematography by Flor Tejada.

SUMMARY:The Making of The Museum of Natural Non-History with Kaktus
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to blur the lines between the micro and macro cosmos. Let’s be giants among germs and at the same time germs among giants. \nBodies break down and decay\, providing support for other bodies. In this workshop\, we want to continue the process of body breaking and making using our natural tools of the imagination to do the same to our own creations. \nLet yourself pass from one being to another. Let the imagination feed on dead plants\, animal and human remains as it deconstructs intricate life forms into their simplest components. \nTime table: 25th of September 2021\n13.00. We meet at The Botanical Garden (Main entrance: Møllevejen 10A\, 8000 Aarhus).\n13.30. Discovery walk: Gathering of materials.\n14.30. We walk to ARoS Museum.\n15.00 – 17.00. The making of The Museum of Natural Non-History.\n*The workshop is open to all age groups\, but children and teens under 15 years old should be accompanied by an adult. \nWorkshop Leaders:\nÞórir and Brák from KAKTUS\nBrák Jónsdóttir (b. 1996) is a visual artist and Þórir Hermann (b. 1994) is a composer\, gardener and a multimedia artist. Their collaborative works mainly take the form of video works\, books\, sculptures and performances\, but recently their subjects have revolved around humanity’s relationship with nature. Brák and Þórir explore life forms and organisms. Their approach is often oriented towards the blushing tension between pain and pleasure\, natural and man-made materials. “We strive to look for a way to be at one with the world and sometimes find it in the gap between the imaginary and the real\, by intertwining the portals of reality and fantasy.” In their most recent work they have addressed the power of vulnerability while recognizing and embracing the interdependence and connection humans have with the earth. SUMMARY:Short Films Screening by Patrick Topitschnig
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the ARoS Museum Theater for a screening of selected short films by Patrick Topitschnig. \nA kind of black humor pervades Patrick Topitschnig’s videos. Like in the horror-movie genre he works with audiovisual situations which affect the bodies of the spectators provoking an uncertainty\, sometimes a slight restlessness. \nPrecisely composed images expose their own constructedness and testify to the artist’s interest in cinematic duration. Occasionally\, this duration becomes a metaphor for the literal “lifetime” of pro-tagonists\, objects\, and buildings. All aspects of cinematic sound – a composed score\, music\, spoken language – are used to reflect the connections between image and narration creating a very specific atmosphere\, whereas the “real“ backstory of a work is often revealed much later\, be it the history of an abandoned salt mine in Romania or a portrait of a high-tech funeral home in Australia.

It’s a celebration of freedom and liberation. The choreographies recall the condition of slavery and the sound of chains around the ankles but at the same time it parodies the (often drunk) masters and denounces the oppression they practice. The rhythms and colorful costumes express joy and enthusiasm\, leading in the end to the ideal break of physical and/or psychological change.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See Group Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This Exhibition occurs at the Chocolate Factory Theater. See full exhibition information and visiting protocol. \nShare on Facebook. \nTaking place throughout October\, Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See is a group exhibition curated by Cameron Granger\, Makeba Rainey and Haiba Hamilton. It is part of the Rhizome Project. \nLet’s think about the shared history of Black Folks in the same way poet Hanif Abdurraqib describes the Soul Train Line: A narrow writhing seemingly endless tunnel of Black Folks smiling and clapping. Where\, in the center\, partners are brought together – sometimes by intention\, many times by fate. And together\, using what knowledge they have of themselves and their bodies\, they must make their way out – to the other side – urged on by the blooming claps around them. \nThese shared stories become less visible as we move through the present and into the future. Our histories are often confined to the margins (a tunnel of its own) and redacted to a distorted past tense. In their place\, a violent vernacular has been built\, creating an imaging that finds Black Folks – to quote sociologist and scholar Ruha Benjamin: “trapped between regimes of invisibility and hypervisibility” \nImage above:\nRicky Weaver\nAmazing Grace\n\nArchival Pigment Print\, Acrylic\n48 in. x 85 in.\n2019

SUMMARY:Curator talk with Dario Mohr & Cameron Granger: Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a curators’ talk with Cameron Granger as he and Dario Mohr discuss the artists and the work in Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See. \nThis exhibition is at the Chocolate Factory Theater. See full exhibition information and visiting protocol. \nShare on Facebook. \nDario Mohr is a New York City based interdisciplinary artist who creates interactive sanctuary experiences. Born in 1988\, Mohr received a BFA from Buffalo State College\, and an MFA from The City College of New York\, as well as an Advanced Certificate from Queens College. In addition to work created in painting\, sculpture or made digitally\, he often includes assembled objects to build immersive “sacred spaces”. These often exist in unexpected places\, using mundane objects. Because objects are endowed with the significance that the viewer blesses it with\, his work can provide a lot of space for divergent perspectives and interpretations. The recycling of old work is also fundamental to Mohr’s practice. You will see previously created paintings and sculptures as well as the reuse of objects\, textiles\, cushions and other elements in future works. Sometimes a previously used item provides the perfect juxtaposition to enhance or add depth to new explorations. In addition to his individual art practice\, he is also the Founder and Director of AnkhLave Arts Alliance\, Inc. which is a non-profit for the recognition and representation of BIPOC artists in contemporary art. \nCameron Granger came up in Cleveland\, Ohio alongside his mother\, Sandra\, inheriting both her love of soul music\, and habit of apologizing too much. A video artist\, he uses his work as both a site for memory making\, and as means to strategize new ways of remembrance in our age of mass media. \nHis recent projects include “The Get Free Telethon” a 24 hour livestream community fundraiser sponsored by Red Bull Arts\, “Pearl” a body of collaborative works with his mother at Ctrl+Shft in Oakland\, and “A library\, for you” a traveling community library most recently housed at ikattha project space in Bombay\, India. He’s a 2017 alumni of the Skowhegan School for Paint & Sculpture.

SUMMARY:Black Femme Brunch presents The Dream Salon: Destroy this World with Desire: A Black Femme World-Wielding Salon
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See group exhibition. This Exhibition occurs at Chocolate Factory. See full exhibition information. \nThis is an online event on Zoom. RSVP on WithFriends for access information. \nShare on Facebook. \n“For us to survive in the mouth of this dragon we call America\, we have had to learn this first and most vital lesson– that we were never meant to survive. Not as human beings. And neither were most of you here today\, Black or not.” – Audre Lorde \nIn this workshop\, Black Femme Brunch will guide participants in leaving behind the present and pursue the possibility of a future world: a world in which Black\, fat\, dark-skinned\, poor\, disabled\, neurodivergent\, queer and trans femmes and women (henceforth: The Center) do not exist in the clutches of the dragon\, but instead glide through life free of its menace. All participants will then collaboratively facilitate a dreaming salon that imagines sustainable futures for The Center. \nWe will craft a world in which the needs and desires of The Center are the standard of care\, access\, and community. To guide our visioning\, we will discuss how power and access to humanity is withheld from The Center and then framed as individual moralistic failing. This is done in order to maintain the illusion that we deserve less. When we stand in the resonance that there is no need to repress The Center\, we can imagine all that we do desire. \nWorking together in small\, self-selected break-out affinity groups\, we will actively vision a future that sustains the needs and desires of The Center. Our dreaming will garner a safe place for kikis\, connection\, care\, learning\, family\, gender expression\, sexual expansion\, sustainable living\, and interdependence. \nFatphobia\, ableism\, patriarchy\, transmisogynoir\, and whiteness require the fuel of anti-blackness to sustain trauma\, pain\, and the disintegration of our wholeness. Our goal is to manifest a world that opens us to our fullness. May our brave dreams generate enclaves of care\, safety\, pleasure\, play\, rest\, and ease that will allow us to pierce the dragon. \nBlack Femme Brunch builds community by being a radical\, irreverent\, and unapologetic celebration of trans and queer black femmes of all genders. Founded in 2014 in Washington\, DC by Tuere Khanyisa and Shaan Wade\, Black Femme Brunch began with a simple idea: to create an oasis for black femmes in the desert of white queer events\, black straight spaces and cisheteronormative LGBT events. Under the stewardship of current creative co-directors\, Tuere Khanyisa and Janae Williams (juh weems)\, since 2015\, Black Femme Brunch has curated an Annual DC Black Pride Concert\, hosted kink and sexual health events\, hosted artbuilds\, film screenings\, parties and picnics amongst other rich offerings. Black Femme Brunch has been featured on the Black Joy Mixtape (an award-winning black feminist podcast)\, collaborated with Blk in Space\, Halcyon Arts Lab\, BYP100DC\, BLMDC\, Woolly Mammoth Theatre and has presented at International Mx. Leather & Bootblack Conference\, Common Field Annual Convening and at the Black Sex Workers Conference. Black Femme Brunch will continue until the entire world is Black Femme Euphoria! \nTuere Khanyisa (Zaddi) is an afrofuturist writer\, editor\, visual artist and curator of black trans and queer spaces. She is a Dominant genderqueer Black femme who is also fat\, kinky\, poly and playfully describes herself as “gender suspicious.” Her messianic imperative is to invigorate and unite the black queer and trans community with the radical notion that pursuing pleasure is affirming\, powerful\, and a long denied and reclaimed right of black people’s humanity. She works to demystify understandings of kink\, leather\, and sex positivity by offering people safe containers to explore and encounter them without judgement. Zaddi loves writing black speculative fiction and imagining new worlds where black people in the future not only survive\, but thrive. Zaddi is the creator and creative co-director of Black Femme Brunch\, Road Captain of the Mid-Atlantic Onyx Pearls\, an intern of the Carter Johnson Leather Library\, and the POC Liaison of IMsL/BB. \nJanae Williams (juh weems//fatblackclit) is an interdependent-disciplinary artist whose practice takes cues from: the black baptist church pews she was raised on\, the many generations of shapeshifting fat black femmes\, dykes and gender-suspicious beings before (and after) her and her love of Seeing black folks. Since 2015\, JANAE has organized Black Femme Brunch\, an irreverent celebration of black queer and trans femmes based in Washington\, DC. She stewards each enclave of her artistic and curatorial practice as an invitation to black folks into witnessing themselves in their wholeness\, envisioning (and practicing) liberation for themselves and maximizing play and pleasure as hallowed tools of black bodily and spatial sovereignty. Supported by the Halcyon Arts Lab Fellowship\, JANAE composed “hand-i-work”\, a suite of arrangements (recompositions) of hymns and spirituals recovered from her childhood memories and piloted Black Intimacy Practice (BIP)\, a container for black folks (specifically those who are fat trans and queer femmes) to explore and expand their relationships to touch and movement through play. Currently\, juh is constructing a world (futureniggaheaven) where black folks are free. futureniggaheaven is protected by nearly 900 peculiar beings called ALLUS (a portmanteau of “all of us”) who are angels protecting black folks’ imaginative capacity for visioning liberation\, sovereignty and expansive modes of care and being.

SUMMARY:Closing & Zine Release: Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a closing reception and celebration for a zine launch for Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See. \nThis Exhibition occurs at Chocolate Factory. See full exhibition information and visiting protocol. \nShare on Facebook. \nThe release of the Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See zine created by Danielle and Kevin McCoy of Work/Play includes conversations between Curator Cameron Grainger and the artists in addition to images of the work from the show.   \nThe zine is an archive of the thought processes behind the work\, and curation of that work\, inside of the exhibition. With the show having such a limited run\, this is an attempt at finding some sort of permanence for everything we put into the project. It’s a way of saying we were here\, we did this\, and this is why we wanted to do it. It’s something that we can carry forward with us as we move forward with our work. \nWORK/PLAY is an interdisciplinary design duo based in St. Louis\, MO. Kevin received a BFA in Graphic Communication from the University of Missouri St. Louis and recently graduated from Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts\, Washington University in St. Louis earning his MFA. Danielle is a conceptual artist\, writer\, and educator. Together\, they combine illustration\, minimal contemporary design along with experimental printmaking techniques into their art practice. With their use of design and printmaking\, the collaborative duo has expanded their practice to textile arts\, site-specific installation\, publications and bookmaking to deliver an acerbic dose of revelation to inspire audiences and trigger experiences. They continuously experiment with new techniques\, seeking to push beyond the perceived boundaries of art\, design and printmaking.
