Anastasia’s solo and collaborative projects serve as sites for research and meaning-making. Anastasia’s sound works have been premiered at MoMA PS1\, The Film Society of Lincoln Center\, HERE Arts\, Triskelion\, and Incubator Arts Project. Anastasia studied Electronic Music and Recording Media at Mills College. \n \n\nCal Fish (collaborators TBA) Living in different parts of New York my whole life\, I have been working to assert art as a necessarily productive social container and sound as a medium for communication with latent potential. Media ecology and acoustic ecology have been at the center of my text studies while I have practiced with interactive sound sculpture\, social scores\, and group movement. I have been involved in DIY art/music organizing around the U.S. and internationally for about six years. In current projects I have been focusing on making a specific place/community’s relationships between public space\, ecology\, and empathy audible through dynamic collaboration.\nMallie Sanford acknowledges and examines their body dysphoria\, hoarding tendencies\, andtoxic behaviors displayed in personal relationships through the use of fabric\, video\, performance and sound. The work represents the intense emotion emitted when making the work\, and the attempt to make the body and mind function as a genderless form. \n\n\n\n\nKwami Winfield\nThe trumpet indexes many things: the call of battle\, the cry of freedom\, the cool. By sight\, sound\, and (recently) by name\, it carries markedly varied significance. The trumpet is an amplifier. Human energy vibrates a column of air inside of the instrument and resonates in particular pitches. An amplifier takes an input signal and outputs a much louder signal with some degree of distortion or saturation\, the trumpet produces a harmonic distortion of the input signal. The trumpet is a machine with discreet and insular mechanics that are hidden to the eye but are vital to the sound product. My engagement with music and sound is not focused on the sound product\, but the process and prosody of musical play.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Visual Storytelling with Jaime Iglehart
DESCRIPTION:Saturday January 26th and Sunday January 27th\nNoon – 6pm\nPlease share this event with friends \nIn this 2 day workshop we will focus on the language of cinema by exploring shot choices and composition from throughout film history. We will then work with scripted scenes from our favorite films\, breaking up into teams to shoot the scenes with our own shot choices. At the end of the two day workshop\, we will screen our films alongside the original scenes as they were shot for Hollywood. We will compare their shot choices with our own and that of our classmates and discuss what choices were made and why. This exercise is meant to sharpen the director’s eye and will incorporate learning skill sets such as shot listing\, film producing and creating the bird’s eye shot diagram. \nThis workshop is free and open to 16 participants. All ages are welcome with adult supervision. Participants should plan on attending both Saturday and Sunday \n\nTo register\, email: jaime.iglehart@gmail.com\n\nJaime Idea Iglehart is a multimedia artist who earned her Master’s Degree in filmmaking from Columbia University\, and her Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking from Bard College. Her multi-media work incorporates experimental narrative films based in dream logic\, with expansions into interactive film-set installations and social sculpture interventions. \nImage Credit: Man With a Movie Camera\, by Dziga Vertov

SUMMARY:Flux Thursday: Act Up. Sound Out.
DESCRIPTION:Act Up. Sound Out.\nThursday\, January 10th\nDinner at 7pm\nPresentations at 8pm\nFlux Gallery\, this location is wheelchair accessible \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLet us know you’re coming on Facebook \nYou are invited to Act Up. Sound Out. This month’s community potluck and art salon. The event is free\, but please do bring food or drink to share! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will take place in the Flux Factory Gallery\, which is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoundtable? Join us on the Sofreh\, a traditional Iranian backdrop that holds a feast\, a gathering\, a place to come together. Feast on the community Sofreh with a presentation of work by Yams Collective member Maureen Catbagan\, a presentation and surprise Amazon Jungle Gym performance by Jevijoe Vitug\, and a Weaponizing Sound presentation and workshop by Sholeh Asgary and Rachel Austin. The central microphone and stage will be open to all for the rest of the evening to pose pressing questions for discussion\, to sing a song\, or to share a story. What are the parameters that fail our experience today and what does it mean to be an artist within a larger community? How do we act up? Bring a spice or herb to create your own carbonated yogurt beverage. Participation is optional\, but we encourage you to Act Up\, Sound Out!    \nMaureen Catbagan is a Filippino-American\, multi-media artist based in Brooklyn whose work engages social collectivity\, examines relations between identity and experience\, and explores new forms of empowerments.  Collaborative projects include Abang-guard\, Flux Factory\, HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? collective\, and experimental music groups Bloodflames and PXALM. She is currently in post-production for her first feature film Lilly Galaxy. \nJevijoe Vitug’s project-based practice ranges from painting\, objects\, performance to community engaged work. Drawn from his personal experience as an immigrant who constantly moves from one place to another\, his projects are connected to the notion of reinvention amidst diversity of contradictions. \nBorn in 1977 in the Philippines and currently lives and works in New York\, Vitug’s processes focus on how to negotiate hybrid identities in response to constant change by creating a confluence of the past and the future\, dream and reality\, invisibility and visibility\, the local and the global. \nSholeh Asgary and Rachel Austin\, Weaponizing Sound\nSholeh Asgary is an Iranian born (1982)\, American multidisciplinary artist who references lens based media through sculpture\, painting\, installation and sound. Related to early somatic experiences and traumas of the diasporic condition\, her multidisciplinary works address the way objects create disambiguation and break down language and representation. Current artist-in-residence at Flux Factory. \nBorn in the backwoods of Virginia\, and living and working between New York and Belfast\, Rachel Austin is an interdisciplinary artist\, carving her name as an improviser\, songwriter\, and electronic composer. Austin’s electronic work exposes the links between sound and narrative — the abstract sounds we hear so often in improvisation and the words that lace the head when filled with sound. She sometimes creates pieces of divided sound and performance art\, art that intersects with the personal-political to create momentary space for suspension of auto-prescribed narratives. \nWeaponizing Sound is based on the idea that we may lack the vocabulary needed to adequately express self both locally and cross culturally. By becoming closer to our own utterances and vocalizations\, one will discover and develop new/alternative ways of communication sans vocabulary based on the verbal. Can this put us in touch with something unknown? Can a sound name a thing we have no name for? Is this enough? Weaponizing sound does not indicate to inflict pain on another. Quite the contrary. “Weaponizing” can be seen as an admittance of vulnerability.

SUMMARY:Sniff Out: Residency Exhibition by Bruno Silva
DESCRIPTION:SNIFF OUT\nDecember 13th – 16th\nOpening Reception/FLUX THURSDAY: December 13th\, 7pm – 10pm\nGallery Hours: December 13th –16th\, 4pm – 6pm\nor by contacting the artist s.brunomail@gmail.com \nSniff Out is an exhibition from Bruno Silva\, a current Flux Factory Artist-in-Residence. By wandering from space to space\, Bruno invites the visitor to stroll around the existing architectural and ambient features of Flux Factory. \nThe meeting point is the gallery space of Flux Factory. \nPlease join us on Thursday\, December 13th\, for our monthly community potluck and art salon: an informal time to catch up with old friends\, eat something delicious prepared by our artist-chefs\, and explore Bruno Silva’s exhibition Sniff Out.\nThe event is free\, but please do bring food or drink to share! \nPart of this event will take place in the Flux Factory kitchen\, which is up a long flight of stairs. Unfortunately\, this event is not wheelchair accessible. \nBio\nThe perceptual quality of things and the intensity of ordinary events are protagonists in the work of Bruno Silva. In his practice\, he lets himself be surrounded by forms\, observed or found according to moments of strolling\, personal experiences or random encounters that become the sources of his work. These characteristics found in everyday life lead the artist to determine a relationship between an object and its environment\, and voluntarily suspend the definition of the work in favor of memory and a form of collective speculation. Bruno Silva has recently exposed at ZZ Studio in Lyon (France) and at Cité Internationale des Arts\, Paris (France). He has also exposed at FELT Galleri\, Bergen (Norway)\, TARS Gallery in Bangkok (Thailand)\, Galeria do Sol in Porto (Portugal). Bruno realized residencies at Vivarium\, Rennes (France)\, Hordaland Kunstsenter\, Bergen (Norway) and at Residency Unlimited\, New-York. \nbruno-silva.eu

SUMMARY:Migration in Transition: Residency Exhibition by Open Place
DESCRIPTION:Migration in Transition\nNovember 15 – 20th\nRSVP on Facebook \nOpening + Curator’s Tour\, November 15\, 6 – 9pm\nClosing Reception\, November 20th\, 6pm – 9pm\nOpen Hours: Saturday\, Sunday and Monday 1pm – 6pm\, Tuesday 1pm – 9pm\n \nExhibition\, workshops and events by the Ukrainian collaborative duo Open Place \n\nThe exhibition Migration in Transition presents two volumes of research: Fresh Market Archive and a publication titled SOURCE. An archive is a kind of mélange – a mixing of various narratives and social compounds. Open Place has been collecting stories determined by the themes of emigration\, violations of employee and human rights\, patriarchal control over women\, xenophobia\, self-identification and identity\, and other precarious conditions. The publication SOURCE is a collection of interviews of people and groups who are actively challenging the political status-quo regarding the status of marginalized people and other difficult political issues\, and who have visions of proactive tactics on how to address them. \nThe works in Migration in Transition include materials gathered from Open Place’s international research as well as stories collected during their residence at Flux Factory. \nMigration and challenges that arise because of migration\, was the starting point of Open Place’s research. They began to understand migration as a process of transition\, which is fundamental to so much of contemporary life. People migrate between identities\, countries\, languages\, economic realities\, genders\, political beliefs\, contexts. Migration in Transition is an attempt to build bridges through disparate experiences\, and create a source of trust and solidarity. Migration in Transition is a collaborative environment and the place for reflection. \nThe goal of Migration in Transition is to record diverse experiences in one expansive text\, and to create a political and social document collectively. This exhibition presents Open Place’s ongoing goal to bring together different perspectives into a universal message\, offering strategies and tactics that we can all access. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by workshops and discussion. Full schedule will coming soon. \nOpen Place Bio\nIn 1999 Yuriy Kruchak and Iuliia Kosterieva organized the artistic platform Open Place. It is directed to extension of creative research and to establishment of the links between art process and the different layers of modern society. Art is understood as a space of intersections of artistic social and political processes. The platform seeks to provide both the artist and the viewer with a specific form of equality and liberation. Open Place strive to extend the borders of influence of art\, and to engage the new groups of people to creative process\, through the interdisciplinary projects\, as well as to establish a fruitful dialogue between society and those who creates art.\n\nwww.openplace.com.ua

SUMMARY:Mark For Redaction Film (deseos)
DESCRIPTION:Mark For Redaction Films\nThis Series is a part of the Major Exhibition Mark for Redaction\, envisioned by Razan Al-Salah and curated by Hilal Khalil\n \n\nOctober 28\, 5pm\nScreening of deseos / رغبة\nFollowed by discussion with co-writer Maya Mikdashi \nFollowing a performance by NAXÖ at 6:30pm\n2015\, 30 minutes\n \nFilm by Carlos Motta\nfollowed by a discussionwith Maya Mikdashi\nThe film Deseos / رغبات (Desires) exposes the ways in which medicine\, law\, religion\, and cultural tradition shaped dominant discourses of the gendered and sexual body through the narration of two parallel stories. The first is that of Martina\, who lived in Colombia during the late colonial period of the early 19th century. The second is the fictionalized life of Nour\, who lived in Beirut during the late Ottoman Empire. Part documentary and part fiction\, the film presents an imaginary correspondence between these women. Separated by geography\, culture\, and religion they both faced the consequences of defying sex and gender norms \nThe colonial court prosecuted Martina in 1803 for being a “hermaphrodite” after being accused by her female lover of having an “unnatural” body. Martina was tried in a court of law and ultimately set free after medical doctors appointed by the court were unable to find evidence of her lover’s accusation. This story is documented in the 1803 legal case found in the Archivo General de la Nación in Bogotá\, Colombia. \nMeanwhile\, in Beirut\, Nour was married to her lover’s brother after Nour’s mother found them making love. Despite the fact that Nour’s story does not occur in a courtroom nor is it found in a legal case\, notions of Islamic and late Ottoman laws\, cultures\, and histories condition her narrative. \nMaya Mikdashi  \n\n\n\nMaya received her Ph.D. from Columbia University’s Department of Anthropology. Her dissertation\, entitled “Sex\, Secularism\, and Sectarianism: Practicing Citizenship in Contemporary Lebanon\,” is an ethnography of the Lebanese legal system and of the entanglements between gender\, sex\, and sectarianism. She is also Co-Founder/Editor of Jadaliyya Ezine and Co-Director of the documentary film About Baghdad. She works at the intersection of legal anthropology\, feminism\, queer theory\, and theories of secularism and religion.\n \n \n\n\n\n  \n

The workshop uses modified Boalian techniques\, writing\, and sculpting to examine embodiment as an interaction between multiple spaces. \nhttp://rayferreira.net/

SUMMARY:Perambulator
DESCRIPTION:Perambulater by Clare Qualmann\nThe word Perambulator has three meanings listed in the dictionary – a stroller or baby carriage\, a person who walks\, and a surveyor (on foot). \nThe Perambulator walk invites stroller users to walk together en masse around the Long Island City neighborhood\, collectively surveying its challenges. When walked alone these impediments are an annoyance\, and often unnoticed. Walking together with strollers heightens their visibility; the absurdity of multiple strollers negotiating each obstacle in their path enables a collective\, creative and aesthetic reclamation of the mobility challenges when caring for children. Come and help us explore the obstacles and interruptions that the materiality of the street presents to the stroller user\, creating a collective performance to make visible our presence. \nWalk Time and Date: Saturday September 15\, Perambulator walk departs 11:30 am\nLocation: Flux Factory \nWalk Length: approx. 2 hours (with opportunities to pause\, rest and play)\nWalk Level: Moderate – pushing stroller in a group\nRegister Here \nPlease wear comfortable clothing and shoes. \nThis event is presented as part of Saunter Trek Escort Parade…(S.T.E.P.) at Flux Factory\, curated by Christina Freeman\, Emireth Herrera and moira williams. \nOpening and Curators’ tour\, September 6\, 2018 from 6 – 9PM\nClosing reception and party\, September 29 from 6 – 9PM
