DESCRIPTION:Sunaina Bhalla\, 2026. \n\n\n\nArtist Talk + Textile Lab with Sunaina Bhalla \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAs the fall festival season approaches in Queens\, artist Sunaina Bhalla invites participants to gather around the saree as a site of memory\, politics\, and inheritance. Taking place during South Asian festival season\, the event makes space to consider how textiles carry memory across generations of diasporic communities. What happens when we come together to reflect on the political and familial legacy behind such adornments? \n\n\n\nIn The Saree Project\, Bhalla examines the saree not only as an emblem of beauty and tradition\, but as a cultural text shaped by histories of gender\, power\, restriction\, and control. Drawing from a personal archive of sarees inherited from her mother and mother-in-law\, Bhalla considers how sartorial codes\, ideas of modesty and ownership\, colonial encounters\, and changing forms of surface design and tailoring have shaped the garment and bodies that wear it.The Artist Talk + Textile Lab combines a brief artist talk with a conversation on collective textile sharing\, and hands-on making. Participants will work with the saree\, adding their mark to an evolving component of The Saree Project; and experiment with block printing\, with fabrics provided by Bhalla. Participants are also invited to bring an ancestral textile\, memory\, or story associated with the politics of garments.Please note: Participants are invited to bring textiles to work with for block printing. Block printing technique works best on natural\, absorbent fabrics such as cotton and linen. Trained as a textile designer in India\, she later studied the traditional Japanese art of Nihonga under Suiko Ohta-sensei in Tokyo\, before completing her MFA at Goldsmiths\, University of London and LASALLE College of the Arts. \n\n\n\nHer practice explores ritual\, repetition\, and the body’s relationship to pain and healing—often using industrial materials\, textiles\, and embroidery to reflect fragility and transformation over time. Currently\, she is researching traditional healing practices in Southeast Asia and their use in chronic conditions like diabetes and breast cancer. \n\n\n\nShe has exhibited internationally in Japan\, India\, Singapore\, Europe\, and the Middle East. Her works are held in the permanent collections of the ESSL Museum in Vienna\, Mumbai Airports Authority\, and private collectors worldwide.

Pavone String EnsembleViolist and composer Jessica Pavone premieres a new work for string trio\, joined by violinists Charlotte Munn-Wood and Mazz Swift. Formed in 2017\, the ensemble performs music that moves fluidly between traditional notation\, improvisational instruction\, metered passages\, and time-based scores. \n\n\n\nPavone is based in Queens and has built an international reputation for expanding the expressive possibilities of the viola. Her work has been presented at The Kitchen\, Pioneer Works\, Roulette\, the Noguchi Museum\, ISSUE Project Room\, and Socrates Sculpture Park\, with recordings on Tzadik\, Thirsty Ear\, Relative Pitch\, and Astral Spirits. She was featured in NPR’s The Mix: 100 Composers Under 40\, and her work has received support from Chamber Music America\, New Music USA\, the Jerome Foundation\, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, NYSCA\, NYFA\, and the Queens Arts Fund. JazzTimes has called her “a free-thinker who can’t be pigeonholed.” \n\n\n\nThis premiere is supported by the NYFA Queens Arts Fund and Chamber Music America. \n\n\n\nQiujiang Levi Lu & Lesley Mok duoLesley Mok is a New York City-based percussionist and sound artist. Their work is guided by a continual search for the connection between the mundane and the divine\, the experience and manipulation of time\, and a desire to capture emotional dissonance and complexity. Their debut album The Living Collection (American Dreams Records\, 2023) was named International Debut Album of the Year at the 2024 Deutscher Jazz Preis; their solo LP transient followed in July 2026. \n\n\n\nQiujiang Levi Lu is an experimental musician\, composer\, and creative technologist. Described by I Care If You Listen as “brutally cohesive\,” Lu works across live performance\, electroacoustic instrument design\, installation\, composition\, film scoring\, and multimedia collaboration\, bringing tenderness and violence into the same sonic space. Lu builds self-made electroacoustic instruments\, including intraoral microphone-speaker feedback systems\, amplified laptop interfaces\, and motion-sensing electronics that extend the body as a site of sound-making. \n\n\n\nBongsu ParkLondon-based Korean artist Bongsu Park is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist. Her work explores the intangible domains of dreams and memory\, examining how personal experiences intersect with cultural identity and collective histories. Her recent work explores plants as carriers of memory and cultural knowledge\, transforming botanical materials\, sensory experiences\, and personal stories into collective forms. \n\n\n\nPark presents a site-responsive audiovisual installation with scent. Naturally dyed and eco-printed textiles made in a workshop in with participants hang as projection surfaces for video of Queens plant life and urban environments\, accompanied by original music by haihm and a live scent element passed among the audience.
