Sound Out. This month’s community potluck and art salon. The event is free\, but please do bring food or drink to share! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will take place in the Flux Factory Gallery\, which is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoundtable? Join us on the Sofreh\, a traditional Iranian backdrop that holds a feast\, a gathering\, a place to come together. Feast on the community Sofreh with a presentation of work by Yams Collective member Maureen Catbagan\, a presentation and surprise Amazon Jungle Gym performance by Jevijoe Vitug\, and a Weaponizing Sound presentation and workshop by Sholeh Asgary and Rachel Austin. The central microphone and stage will be open to all for the rest of the evening to pose pressing questions for discussion\, to sing a song\, or to share a story. What are the parameters that fail our experience today and what does it mean to be an artist within a larger community? How do we act up? Bring a spice or herb to create your own carbonated yogurt beverage. Participation is optional\, but we encourage you to Act Up\, Sound Out!    \nMaureen Catbagan is a Filippino-American\, multi-media artist based in Brooklyn whose work engages social collectivity\, examines relations between identity and experience\, and explores new forms of empowerments.  Collaborative projects include Abang-guard\, Flux Factory\, HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? collective\, and experimental music groups Bloodflames and PXALM. She is currently in post-production for her first feature film Lilly Galaxy. \nJevijoe Vitug’s project-based practice ranges from painting\, objects\, performance to community engaged work. Drawn from his personal experience as an immigrant who constantly moves from one place to another\, his projects are connected to the notion of reinvention amidst diversity of contradictions. \nBorn in 1977 in the Philippines and currently lives and works in New York\, Vitug’s processes focus on how to negotiate hybrid identities in response to constant change by creating a confluence of the past and the future\, dream and reality\, invisibility and visibility\, the local and the global. \nSholeh Asgary and Rachel Austin\, Weaponizing Sound\nSholeh Asgary is an Iranian born (1982)\, American multidisciplinary artist who references lens based media through sculpture\, painting\, installation and sound. Related to early somatic experiences and traumas of the diasporic condition\, her multidisciplinary works address the way objects create disambiguation and break down language and representation. Current artist-in-residence at Flux Factory. \nBorn in the backwoods of Virginia\, and living and working between New York and Belfast\, Rachel Austin is an interdisciplinary artist\, carving her name as an improviser\, songwriter\, and electronic composer. Austin’s electronic work exposes the links between sound and narrative — the abstract sounds we hear so often in improvisation and the words that lace the head when filled with sound. She sometimes creates pieces of divided sound and performance art\, art that intersects with the personal-political to create momentary space for suspension of auto-prescribed narratives. \nWeaponizing Sound is based on the idea that we may lack the vocabulary needed to adequately express self both locally and cross culturally. By becoming closer to our own utterances and vocalizations\, one will discover and develop new/alternative ways of communication sans vocabulary based on the verbal. Can this put us in touch with something unknown? Can a sound name a thing we have no name for? Is this enough? Weaponizing sound does not indicate to inflict pain on another. Quite the contrary. “Weaponizing” can be seen as an admittance of vulnerability.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Visual Storytelling with Jaime Iglehart
DESCRIPTION:Saturday January 26th and Sunday January 27th\nNoon – 6pm\nPlease share this event with friends \nIn this 2 day workshop we will focus on the language of cinema by exploring shot choices and composition from throughout film history. We will then work with scripted scenes from our favorite films\, breaking up into teams to shoot the scenes with our own shot choices. At the end of the two day workshop\, we will screen our films alongside the original scenes as they were shot for Hollywood. We will compare their shot choices with our own and that of our classmates and discuss what choices were made and why. This exercise is meant to sharpen the director’s eye and will incorporate learning skill sets such as shot listing\, film producing and creating the bird’s eye shot diagram. \nThis workshop is free and open to 16 participants. All ages are welcome with adult supervision. Composer\, sound artist\, and instrument builder. Completely ambivalent about music. Daniel studied with composer Maryanne Amacher and with multi-instrumentalist Mark Stewart. He has performed as a soloist on modular synthesizer with the American Symphony Orchestra\, developed sound installations in abandoned concert halls\, and played innumerable basement punk shows. Daniel’s lifework investigating the aesthetics of hearing damage has received international press (Nature Journal\, 2014); as an ally in the search for a cure\, he has been awarded the title of “tinnitus ambassador” by the Deutsche Tinnitus-Stiftung. Recent activities include Composing the Tinnitus Suites: 2016\, a concert series about hearing damage\, taking place in Philadelphia\, PA\, supported by a Project Grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Daniel received his MA in Music Composition from Wesleyan University\, has taught analog synthesis at Bard College. After a stint working toward his PhD at University of California\, San Diego\, Daniel returned to the East Coast\, and now lives in Queens\, NY.\n  \n\nAnastasia Clarke is a composer\, performer\, and sound engineer focusing on live embodied electronic music performance. Anastasia’s solo and collaborative projects serve as sites for research and meaning-making. Anastasia’s sound works have been premiered at MoMA PS1\, The Film Society of Lincoln Center\, HERE Arts\, Triskelion\, and Incubator Arts Project. Anastasia studied Electronic Music and Recording Media at Mills College. \n \n\nCal Fish (collaborators TBA) Living in different parts of New York my whole life\, I have been working to assert art as a necessarily productive social container and sound as a medium for communication with latent potential. Media ecology and acoustic ecology have been at the center of my text studies while I have practiced with interactive sound sculpture\, social scores\, and group movement. I have been involved in DIY art/music organizing around the U.S. and internationally for about six years. In current projects I have been focusing on making a specific place/community’s relationships between public space\, ecology\, and empathy audible through dynamic collaboration.\nMallie Sanford acknowledges and examines their body dysphoria\, hoarding tendencies\, andtoxic behaviors displayed in personal relationships through the use of fabric\, video\, performance and sound. The work represents the intense emotion emitted when making the work\, and the attempt to make the body and mind function as a genderless form. \n\n\n\n\nKwami Winfield\nThe trumpet indexes many things: the call of battle\, the cry of freedom\, the cool. By sight\, sound\, and (recently) by name\, it carries markedly varied significance. The trumpet is an amplifier. Human energy vibrates a column of air inside of the instrument and resonates in particular pitches. An amplifier takes an input signal and outputs a much louder signal with some degree of distortion or saturation\, the trumpet produces a harmonic distortion of the input signal. The trumpet is a machine with discreet and insular mechanics that are hidden to the eye but are vital to the sound product. My engagement with music and sound is not focused on the sound product\, but the process and prosody of musical play.

His work with robotics\, sound\, video\, transmission and collective improvisation investigates the questionable calibration of social relationships with material technology. As an educator and designer committed to an equitable\, open source world\, he researches and practices material reuse as a civil responsibility. He has toured extensively in North America and Europe as a musician and teacher. He is currently working with littleBits\, Inc. to revolutionize modular electronics. His music is available on Peira\, Azul Discographica\, Roar Tapes\, and several other record labels.
