SUMMARY:Amphora’s Amorpha with Sally Beauty Twin
DESCRIPTION:Amphora’s Amorpha (Dance\, Music\, Puppetry\, Theater\, Art) will be a multi-media festival Oct 2\, Oct 9 and Oct 16 featuring more than 16 artists on Governors Island at Flux Factory’s residency in building 404A. \nOctober 2nd will feature outdoor performances with visual art backdrops\, showcasing music by Alice Cohen and Breakaway with a dance performance choreographed by Jessica Cook and Shizu Homma. \nOctober 9th will have indoor (with vaccination cards checked at the door) music performances by IDKMYBFFJILL\, a multimedia music show by Gui.dance\, and the tiny\, precisely mechanical puppetry of Deadguy Puppetry. \nOctober 16 will have indoor (with vaccination cards checked at the door) musical performances by Agua Viva from Argentina\, a theater review by Saints of an Unnamed Country\, a poetry reading with fim and modular synth by Chihiro Ito and Lee Tusman\, and an acoustic music performance by Apollo Flower Child. \nVisual art will focus on how representations of differences of scale imitate our relationship to nature\, with art installations by Camilla Padgitt-Coles\, Jevijoe\, Zev Gustafson\, Sally Beauty Twin\, Rebecca Bird and more. \nAspects of this project will be funded through two City Artist Corps grants that participants received. \nArtist bio\nSally Beauty Twin is a New York curator\, writer and painter. See full exhibition information and visiting protocol. \nShare on Facebook. \nTaking place throughout October\, Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See is a group exhibition curated by Cameron Granger\, Makeba Rainey and Haiba Hamilton. It is part of the Rhizome Project. \nLet’s think about the shared history of Black Folks in the same way poet Hanif Abdurraqib describes the Soul Train Line: A narrow writhing seemingly endless tunnel of Black Folks smiling and clapping. Where\, in the center\, partners are brought together – sometimes by intention\, many times by fate. And together\, using what knowledge they have of themselves and their bodies\, they must make their way out – to the other side – urged on by the blooming claps around them. \nThese shared stories become less visible as we move through the present and into the future. Our histories are often confined to the margins (a tunnel of its own) and redacted to a distorted past tense. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a curators’ talk with Cameron Granger as he and Dario Mohr discuss the artists and the work in Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See. \nThis exhibition is at the Chocolate Factory Theater. See full exhibition information and visiting protocol. \nShare on Facebook. \nDario Mohr is a New York City based interdisciplinary artist who creates interactive sanctuary experiences. Born in 1988\, Mohr received a BFA from Buffalo State College\, and an MFA from The City College of New York\, as well as an Advanced Certificate from Queens College. In addition to work created in painting\, sculpture or made digitally\, he often includes assembled objects to build immersive “sacred spaces”. These often exist in unexpected places\, using mundane objects. Because objects are endowed with the significance that the viewer blesses it with\, his work can provide a lot of space for divergent perspectives and interpretations. The recycling of old work is also fundamental to Mohr’s practice. You will see previously created paintings and sculptures as well as the reuse of objects\, textiles\, cushions and other elements in future works. Sometimes a previously used item provides the perfect juxtaposition to enhance or add depth to new explorations. In addition to his individual art practice\, he is also the Founder and Director of AnkhLave Arts Alliance\, Inc. which is a non-profit for the recognition and representation of BIPOC artists in contemporary art. \nCameron Granger came up in Cleveland\, Ohio alongside his mother\, Sandra\, inheriting both her love of soul music\, and habit of apologizing too much. A video artist\, he uses his work as both a site for memory making\, and as means to strategize new ways of remembrance in our age of mass media. \nHis recent projects include “The Get Free Telethon” a 24 hour livestream community fundraiser sponsored by Red Bull Arts\, “Pearl” a body of collaborative works with his mother at Ctrl+Shft in Oakland\, and “A library\, for you” a traveling community library most recently housed at ikattha project space in Bombay\, India. He’s a 2017 alumni of the Skowhegan School for Paint & Sculpture.

RSVP on WithFriends for access information. \nShare on Facebook. \n“For us to survive in the mouth of this dragon we call America\, we have had to learn this first and most vital lesson– that we were never meant to survive. Not as human beings. And neither were most of you here today\, Black or not.” – Audre Lorde \nIn this workshop\, Black Femme Brunch will guide participants in leaving behind the present and pursue the possibility of a future world: a world in which Black\, fat\, dark-skinned\, poor\, disabled\, neurodivergent\, queer and trans femmes and women (henceforth: The Center) do not exist in the clutches of the dragon\, but instead glide through life free of its menace. All participants will then collaboratively facilitate a dreaming salon that imagines sustainable futures for The Center. \nWe will craft a world in which the needs and desires of The Center are the standard of care\, access\, and community. To guide our visioning\, we will discuss how power and access to humanity is withheld from The Center and then framed as individual moralistic failing. This is done in order to maintain the illusion that we deserve less. When we stand in the resonance that there is no need to repress The Center\, we can imagine all that we do desire. \nWorking together in small\, self-selected break-out affinity groups\, we will actively vision a future that sustains the needs and desires of The Center. Our dreaming will garner a safe place for kikis\, connection\, care\, learning\, family\, gender expression\, sexual expansion\, sustainable living\, and interdependence. \nFatphobia\, ableism\, patriarchy\, transmisogynoir\, and whiteness require the fuel of anti-blackness to sustain trauma\, pain\, and the disintegration of our wholeness. Our goal is to manifest a world that opens us to our fullness. May our brave dreams generate enclaves of care\, safety\, pleasure\, play\, rest\, and ease that will allow us to pierce the dragon. \nBlack Femme Brunch builds community by being a radical\, irreverent\, and unapologetic celebration of trans and queer black femmes of all genders. Founded in 2014 in Washington\, DC by Tuere Khanyisa and Shaan Wade\, Black Femme Brunch began with a simple idea: to create an oasis for black femmes in the desert of white queer events\, black straight spaces and cisheteronormative LGBT events. Under the stewardship of current creative co-directors\, Tuere Khanyisa and Janae Williams (juh weems)\, since 2015\, Black Femme Brunch has curated an Annual DC Black Pride Concert\, hosted kink and sexual health events\, hosted artbuilds\, film screenings\, parties and picnics amongst other rich offerings. Black Femme Brunch has been featured on the Black Joy Mixtape (an award-winning black feminist podcast)\, collaborated with Blk in Space\, Halcyon Arts Lab\, BYP100DC\, BLMDC\, Woolly Mammoth Theatre and has presented at International Mx. Leather & Bootblack Conference\, Common Field Annual Convening and at the Black Sex Workers Conference. Black Femme Brunch will continue until the entire world is Black Femme Euphoria! \nTuere Khanyisa (Zaddi) is an afrofuturist writer\, editor\, visual artist and curator of black trans and queer spaces. She is a Dominant genderqueer Black femme who is also fat\, kinky\, poly and playfully describes herself as “gender suspicious.” Her messianic imperative is to invigorate and unite the black queer and trans community with the radical notion that pursuing pleasure is affirming\, powerful\, and a long denied and reclaimed right of black people’s humanity. She works to demystify understandings of kink\, leather\, and sex positivity by offering people safe containers to explore and encounter them without judgement. Zaddi loves writing black speculative fiction and imagining new worlds where black people in the future not only survive\, but thrive. Zaddi is the creator and creative co-director of Black Femme Brunch\, Road Captain of the Mid-Atlantic Onyx Pearls\, an intern of the Carter Johnson Leather Library\, and the POC Liaison of IMsL/BB. \nJanae Williams (juh weems//fatblackclit) is an interdependent-disciplinary artist whose practice takes cues from: the black baptist church pews she was raised on\, the many generations of shapeshifting fat black femmes\, dykes and gender-suspicious beings before (and after) her and her love of Seeing black folks. Since 2015\, JANAE has organized Black Femme Brunch\, an irreverent celebration of black queer and trans femmes based in Washington\, DC. She stewards each enclave of her artistic and curatorial practice as an invitation to black folks into witnessing themselves in their wholeness\, envisioning (and practicing) liberation for themselves and maximizing play and pleasure as hallowed tools of black bodily and spatial sovereignty. Supported by the Halcyon Arts Lab Fellowship\, JANAE composed “hand-i-work”\, a suite of arrangements (recompositions) of hymns and spirituals recovered from her childhood memories and piloted Black Intimacy Practice (BIP)\, a container for black folks (specifically those who are fat trans and queer femmes) to explore and expand their relationships to touch and movement through play. Currently\, juh is constructing a world (futureniggaheaven) where black folks are free. futureniggaheaven is protected by nearly 900 peculiar beings called ALLUS (a portmanteau of “all of us”) who are angels protecting black folks’ imaginative capacity for visioning liberation\, sovereignty and expansive modes of care and being.

See full exhibition information and visiting protocol. \nShare on Facebook. \nThe release of the Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See zine created by Danielle and Kevin McCoy of Work/Play includes conversations between Curator Cameron Grainger and the artists in addition to images of the work from the show.   \nThe zine is an archive of the thought processes behind the work\, and curation of that work\, inside of the exhibition. With the show having such a limited run\, this is an attempt at finding some sort of permanence for everything we put into the project. It’s a way of saying we were here\, we did this\, and this is why we wanted to do it. It’s something that we can carry forward with us as we move forward with our work. \nWORK/PLAY is an interdisciplinary design duo based in St. Louis\, MO. Kevin received a BFA in Graphic Communication from the University of Missouri St. Louis and recently graduated from Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts\, Washington University in St. Louis earning his MFA. Danielle is a conceptual artist\, writer\, and educator. Together\, they combine illustration\, minimal contemporary design along with experimental printmaking techniques into their art practice. With their use of design and printmaking\, the collaborative duo has expanded their practice to textile arts\, site-specific installation\, publications and bookmaking to deliver an acerbic dose of revelation to inspire audiences and trigger experiences. They continuously experiment with new techniques\, seeking to push beyond the perceived boundaries of art\, design and printmaking.

DESCRIPTION:Whispering Archipelago is a music performance with a focus on not just presenting music outdoors but rather integrating the soundscapes of the island as a performance element. The purpose of Whispering Archipelago is to be a gentle and reserved musical performance that will complement\, harmonize\, and enhance the sonic landscape of Governors’ Island. \nArtist Bios:\nAnthony Janas\nRetired Magician. Boat Captain. Sound Artist with a focus on advanced modular synthesizer techniques and digitally processed field recordings. Member of multimedia group known as Urbe and seminal noise/performance group Panicsville. Contributing artist for the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology. Anthony Janas has presented work throughout the United States\, Mexico and Western Europe. Anthony Janas work has ranged from sound installations on sailboats to playful performances such as juggling cheeseburgers. Anthony Janas’s work attempts to merge the institutional and pastoral moments of human existence. \nAmanda Gutiérrez\nTrained and graduated initially as a stage designer from The National School of Theater. Gutiérrez uses sound and performance art to investigate how these aural conditions affect everyday life. She is actively advocating listening practices while being one of the board of directors of the World Listening Project and currently as the scientific comitée of the Red Ecología Acústica México. She is a Ph.D. student at Concordia University in the HUMA department and a research assistant at lab PULSE\, the Acts of Listening Lab\, and an active member at the Feminist Media Studio at Concordia University. \nJenn Grossman\nA sound/audiovisual artist and sound designer based in Brooklyn\, NY. Her work is concerned with the psycho-spatial and experiential potentials of sensory media\, exploring displaced realities\, staged synchronicity\, cyclical time\, memory\, disorientation\, embodiment\, and perceptual affect. She’s presented/performed at festivals\, museums and conferences nationally and internationally such as Black Mountain College & Museum\, the Museum of the Moving Image and the New York Transit Museum\, along with unconventional public locations like the Central Park tunnels for Make Music New York and in a cell at Fort Jay for the Governor’s Island Art Fair. \nBrendan Landis\nA composer and performer based in Queens\, NY. His work explores themes of animal folklore and symbolism\, music as spiritual practice\, and contrasting extremes presented as necessary opposites. In addition to recording and performing music\, Brendan gives workshops on listening\, singing\, improvisation\, and intuition. He also writes songs as Anura and Receive\, and sometimes plays in Tethers\, Big Hiatus\, and Esther Chlorine.

SUMMARY:Sympoietica: A Grounding and Automatic Drawing Experience
DESCRIPTION:Sympoietica\, by Maureen Catbagan and Sholeh Asgary\, is a participatory performance that creates a space of solace\, recuperation\, and creative expression through our relationship to the earth and its multi-species inhabitants. The audience is invited to participate in a guided soundscape\, movement\, and reflection exercise that connects Governors Island biodiversity and history while expressing their associations through automatic drawing. The performance combines the connective practice of earthing\, the Surrealist technique of automatic drawing\, and feminist theorist Donna Haraway’s concept of sympoiesis or “making- with.” The January 2012 Journal of Environmental Public Health states “reconnection with the Earth’s electrons has been found to promote intriguing physiological changes and subjective reports of well-being. Earthing (or grounding) refers to the discovery of benefits—including better sleep and reduced pain—from walking barefoot outside or sitting…transferring the Earth’s electrons from the ground into the body. Sympoiesis or “making-with” is the concept that things do not create themselves but develop through dynamic interrelations. Through sound\, movement\, and reflection\, the performance generates a collaboration between bodies\, place\, and other living things that center systems of care\, embodied knowledge\, and collective well-being. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSympoietica is made possible by the New York Foundation for the Arts’ #CityArtistCorps Grants. Special thanks to @nyfacurrent\, @NYCulture\, @madein_ny\, and @queenstheatre.\n\n\n\nMaureen Catbagan is a Filipinx American\, multi-media artist based in New York whose work engages social collectivity\, examines relations between identity and experience\, and explores new forms of empowerment. Collaborative projects include Object II Body (with artist IV Castellanos)\, Abang-guard Duo (with artist Jevijoe Vitug)\, Flux Factory\, and HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN?. They have also written critical essays with Dr. Amber Jamilla Musser. Catbagan has exhibited in venues such as ARoS Museum in Denmark\, Witte de Withe Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam\, Whitney Museum of American Art in New York\, and The Contemporary Museum of Honolulu.\n\n\n\nSholeh Asgary is an Iranian-born interdisciplinary sound artist who creates immersive works\, performances and audience participatory scores with interest in liminal spaces experienced by the viewer-participant. Asgary’s current and recent residencies as of 2020 include Real Time & Space\, Headlands Center for the Arts\, Mass MoCA\, ARoS Art Museum\, Wassaic Project\, and Arab.AMP. Her work has been exhibited and screened at Sotheby’s Institute of Art\, Minnesota Street Project\, Gray Area Center for the Arts\, Ann Arbor Film Festival\, Charlotte Street Foundation\, Soundwave Biennial\, Wassaic Project\, and Krowswork\, amongst others. She has also performed as a solo artist\, collaborated\, or created compositions for many of these institutions\, including CounterPulse\, Center for Cultural Studies at University of Santa Cruz\, Kulturmødet Mors\, Mødet Mors\, Aggregate Space Gallery\, and SOMArts. Asgary is a 2020/21 California Arts Council grantee for her workshop series “Majles” created in partnership with with Arab.AMP\, a 2019 Kenneth Rainin Foundation New Project Grant recipient through Dance Elixir\, and recipient of a 2014 Alternative Exposure Grant for curatorial initiatives as Curator and Director of Education and Public Programs at Incline Gallery\, where she founded The Project Room. SUMMARY:Jevi From 9 to 11 Preview Screening
DESCRIPTION:A fictionalized short documentary about an artist who works at a museum during the pandemic. Starring Flux Factory artist Jevijoe Vitug and featuring music by Ben Seretan. The short was directed by Carlos David TC in 2021 and its production was made possible (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.  \n\n\n\nCarlos David TC is a Venezuelan born artist based in NY. His work explores identity in the digital space by experimenting with film\, performance\, video\, site specific installations and self-documentation. He has participated in residencies in Denmark (ARoS Arts Museum) Hungary (Art Quarter Budapest) and New York (Flux Factory).
