OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Flux Factory is putting out an open call for its latest show, FluxBox. The aim of FluxBox is to gather a group of international sound artists, musicians, and sculpture/installation artists to create a walk-through, room-sized “music box” that plays a single song. Like the Disneyland ride “It’s A Small World” all the objects in the exhibit present a world that is connected if simultaneously disjointed, which sings together, but in a harmonious cacophony.

Artists will work from a basic melody composed and sung by a Flux artist, the anchoring point out of which a full song will develop. Each artist will create a sculpture that contributes a musical element to the song—percussion, counterpoint, backup vocals, etc.

By creating a collaborative music box that has many different parts all playing together, FluxBox explores notions of interactivity and will. Artists have to think about how the public interacts with their machines, how their individual machines interact with the other machines, and how they—the artists—interact with each other as well.

FluxBox will open at the end of March 2006 and will run for 4 weeks.
