Ian Warren’s Walden 59

Ongoing, July-August –  Ian Warren
Marina 59, 5914 Beach Channel Drive, Far Rockaway

Artist Ian Warren is has created Walden 59, a seaworthy replica of Henry David Thoreau’s cabin at Walden Pond. The vessel’s maiden voyage will begin in early July at a small beach just south of the George Washington Bridge. From there, in the spirit of transcendental adventure, he will navigate to Marina 59 in the Rockaways in time for Brindalyn Webster’s dedication ceremony on July 9th.

Warren’s work presents a meditation on the experience of being male through storytelling and personal myth-making. These visual narratives, set in rural America, investigate sexuality, rugged individualism, and social conditioning.

“I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil,–to regard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than a member of society.”

-From the essay “Walking” by Henry D. Thoreau
