Michael Meier
Mike Meier is a visual artist, musician, and educator working across painting, drawing, and performance to sift through the noise of the American experience as a means of examining it. His practice draws from comics, cartoons, punk and hardcore, pop culture, and art history to construct a psychologically charged body of work that navigates power, violence, and conditioning through histories of irreverence and dissent. Engaging media, art history, and popular culture as source material, Meier probes the American psyche through satire, expression, and cultural critique.
Meier has taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art since 2012. His work has been exhibited widely in Cleveland, St. Louis, and Chicago, including Traditions: Compounded at the Spartanburg Art Museum (2019), TGIF at Waterloo Arts (an exhibition of over 200 drawings made during the pandemic), and Love Is Resistance, a multidisciplinary exhibition and punk show presented in partnership with the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Art at Transformer Station.
